Chris Archer - Struggles in fifth inning in return Archer (2-4) took the loss Sunday against the White Sox, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings.
Impact Archer pitched quite well through the first four innings, allowing just two singles and recording all five of his strikeouts. After retiring the first two batters of the fifth inning on two pitches, the wheels came off for the 33-year-old as he walked Seby Zavala on four pitches and then gave up hits to the next three batters before being removed. It was Archer's first start since June 30 after spending time on the injured list with left hip tightness. Despite the poor showing Sunday, it has been a solid first half for the veteran, as he's posted a 3.41 ERA through 66 innings and 16 starts.

Jovani Moran - Shakes off calf issue Moran (calf) struck out four in a perfect two-inning appearance out of the bullpen in Friday's 6-2 loss to the White Sox.
Impact Moran had been nursing a bruised right calf coming out of his most recent appearance Tuesday against the Brewers, but he avoided a trip to the injured list and was flawless in his return. Unless he's used out of the bullpen in Sunday's series finale with the White Sox, Moran will head into the All-Star break with a 1.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP to go with 27 strikeouts across 18 innings with the big club this season.

Jose Miranda - Getting steady playing time Miranda will start at third base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the White Sox, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
Impact Miranda will crack the lineup for the fourth time in five games, this time filling in for a resting Gio Urshela at the hot corner. The designated-hitter spot may represent Miranda's clearest path to a full-time gig at the moment, as Gary Sanchez is expected to move off the non-defensive role to take over as the Twins' No. 1 catcher with Ryan Jeffers (thumb) having been placed on the injured list earlier this weekend. The Twins should get Miguel Sano (knee) back from the 60-day IL following the All-Star break, however, with he and Miranda likely to vie for one spot in the team's everyday lineup.

Gary Sánchez - Takes over as primary catcher Sanchez will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the White Sox, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
Impact Sanchez had been starting to lose out on work at designated hitter to begin the past week, but top backstop Ryan Jeffers' (thumb) move to the injured list Friday should pave the way for Sanchez to see steady work behind the dish. He'll be making his third consecutive start at catcher after going 2-for-7 with a walk and a run over the past two contests.

Devin Smeltzer - Optioned to Triple-A Smeltzer was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday.
Impact Smeltzer will return to Triple-A after serving as the Twins' fifth starter since late May. The 26-year-old owns a 4.02 ERA and 1.21 WHIP on the season over 12 starts, but over his last three outings he's produced a far less ideal 8.76 ERA and 2.03 WHIP. Smeltzer was moved in order to open a roster spot for Chris Archer (hip), who was activated from the 15-day injured list Sunday. Minnesota won't need a fifth starter again until the first week of August, at which point Smeltzer will likely be called up from St. Paul.

Impact After missing the minimum 15 days with hip tightness, Archer will be back on the mound for Sunday's final game before the All-Star break. The right-hander has produced a strong 3.08 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 61.1 innings in 15 starts this season, though his 47 punchouts leave much to be desired. He'll look to finish the first half strong as the Twins take on the White Sox.
