Impact The slugging first baseman got an early start to his spring as he gears up for the World Baseball Classic, but Alonso already appeared to be in midseason form Saturday when he crushed a Braxton Garrett offering over the wall in center field in the second inning. Alonso launched 40 homers in 2022 -- the second time in his four-year MLB career he's reached that mark -- with a career-high 131 RBI, and he figures to be a major source of power again this season while hitting in the heart of a potent Mets lineup.

Jose Butto - Impresses in spring start Butto gave up a run on zero hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in Saturday's split-squad game against the Marlins, striking out four straight batters.
Impact The run crossed the plate after he'd left the game in the second inning. Butto touched 97 mph with his fastball, and while the 24-year-old right-hander isn't viewed as an elite prospect, he did post solid numbers between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022 before making his big-league debut in late August. The Mets have plenty of rotation depth, but if injuries thin the ranks, Butto could be a factor later in the year if he continues his development and can add a reliable curveball to his fastball-changeup arsenal.

Darin Ruf - Limited to cage work Ruf (wrist) took batting practice in an indoor cage over the weekend and is expected to move up to live batting practice in the next couple days, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The 36-year-old slugger got a cortisone shot in his right wrist last week after reporting some soreness as he was ramping up his activity level. Ruf is expected to be fully healthy by Opening Day, but he'll likely be limited to a platoon role this year, getting some starts at DH and being used as a pinch hitter against left-handed pitching.

Impact The 29-year-old center fielder is healthy to begin camp, but given his injury history, the Mets are taking a cautious approach with him.
