Set for another bullpen session Sewald (oblique) will throw a second bullpen session Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Impact Sewald threw 18 pitches in his bullpen session Saturday, which was his first since being placed on the 15-day IL with a Grade 2 left oblique strain. Tuesday's session should give the Diamondbacks a clearer picture on Sewald's progress and whether the right-hander is ready for a rehab assignment.

Playing catch Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sewald (oblique) played catch from 60 feet Monday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Impact The right-hander suffered a Grade 2 oblique strain late in spring training, so the fact he's back to throwing just over a week later is an encouraging development. Sewald will need to progress to throwing long toss before moving onto bullpen sessions, so he shouldn't be expected to be activated when first eligible April 9.

It's unclear when he sustained the injury, but the right-hander will spend time on the IL to start the 2024 season. With Sewald out, Kevin Ginkel is the most likely candidate to close for the Diamondbacks in the interim.

Secures sixth save of postseason Sewald pitched a perfect inning to close out the game in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Phillies in Game 7 of the NLCS.

Impact Sewald has yet to give up a run in the playoffs this year, putting together a dominant run of six saves in as many opportunities. The right-hander generated flyouts on all three outs as the Phillies were likely attempting to make any kind of contact to spare elimination. The 33-year-old closer will now have the opportunity to prepare for his first World Series. He has pitched to a 0.50 WHIP across eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts this postseason.

Impact Sewald entered the game with a two-run lead in the bottom of the 10th and retired the first two batters before giving up an RBI single to Cody Bellinger to cut the lead to one run. The right-hander then got Dansby Swanson to foul out for the final out of the game, giving Sewald his fourth save already this month. Impact Sewald has mostly danced around danger effectively since he was traded from Seattle, but he couldn't do it Saturday. A Tyler Stephenson RBI double and a Matt McLain groundout produced the pair of runs on Sewald's line in his second blown save in nine chances with the Diamondbacks. He's now at a 3.25 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 72:21 K:BB through 52.2 innings on the year while converting 28 of 33 save chances.
