Secures 26th save Sewald recorded his 26th save of the season in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Padres, walking two batters in a scoreless ninth inning.

Impact The outing was very nearly a disaster for the former Mariner. Sewald also hit Garrett Cooper with a pitch, eventually loading the bases with two outs, but Juan Soto's drive to left-center field died on the warning track rather than clearing the fence for a walk-off grand slam. Sewald's converted five straight save chances after blowing his first one for Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he's been far from impressive for his new club with a 4.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB through six innings. Barring a complete collapse, however, his spot in the ninth inning appears secure.

Impact Neither Sewald nor Kevin Ginkel were available to close out for the Diamondbacks, so manager Torey Lovullo had Martinez get the final four outs. Sewald and Ginkel had each pitched four times in the last five days.

Strikes out two for 25th save Sewald picked up the save Wednesday against Colorado, allowing one hit while striking out two over a scoreless inning.

Impact Sewald entered the game with a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a leadoff single to Charlie Blackmon before retiring the next three batters, two of which went down swinging. The veteran reliever has now converted each of his last four save opportunities, racking up five strikeouts to only one walk over that stretch. He has, however, allowed a total of four hits over his last two appearances.

Impact Though Sewald got himself into a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth, he managed to retire Charlie Blackmon and Ezequiel Tovar to cap off his third save as a Diamondback and the 24th of the 2023 campaign. After being rocked for three runs and two home runs in his first start with Arizona, Sewald has bounced back with three straight scoreless innings and has converted on all three save attempts. On the year, Sewald owns a 3.26 ERA and a 66:16 K:BB through 47 innings.

Impact After picking up just two appearances -- and blowing a save chance in one of them -- Sewald pitched on consecutive days to earn a pair of saves this weekend. The right-hander is 23-for-27 in save chances between Arizona and Seattle this year, though the Diamondbacks' poor play of late has limited his opportunities to close out games with his new team. He's at a 3.33 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 65:16 K:BB through 46 innings overall.

Impact Sewald was acquired by Arizona at the trade deadline to take over as the closer, but he had garnered only one save opportunity prior to Saturday as the Diamondbacks had stumbled to nine straight losses since he reported to the team. The right-hander got the chance to help end that slide against the Padres, and he came through with a scoreless frame to pick up the save. Sewald tossed 11 of 12 pitches for strikes in the outing and allowed just a harmless single to Juan Soto. Dealt to Arizona The Mariners traded Sewald to the Diamondbacks on Monday in exchange for Dominic Canzone, Josh Rojas and Ryan Bliss, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Impact This is a great landing spot for Sewald as it pertains to his fantasy value, as he shouldn't have any competition for saves in Arizona. The Diamondbacks had been using a committee approach to the ninth inning, and Sewald has a 2.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 21 saves in 43 innings this season. He also has 55 career saves and is under team control through the 2024. season.
