Impact Castellanos homered just 13 times while slashing .263/.305/.389 in his Phillies debut, a line which made him a below-replacement player according to WAR when factoring in his poor defense. Sliders posed a particular problem, and opposing pitchers knew it, throwing him sliders 32.0 percent of the time compared to 21.8 percent against the rest of the league. Long noticed while reviewing the outfielder's film that Castellanos had added multiple extraneous movements of his bat, head and hands, which may have given him less time to see the pitch and decide to lay off as it dove out of the zone. It's too early to say if the changes will have any impact, but there's at least now a narrative to support those betting on a bounce-back.

Craig Kimbrel - Open to flexible role Kimbrel has no problem being part of a closer committee this season, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Kimbrel's 394 career saves lead all active players and rank seventh all-time, but his drop in performance over the last few seasons means he can no longer walk into a room and automatically inherit the closer title. His 3.70 ERA last season wasn't terrible, but his 27.7 percent strikeout rate represented a career low. The Phillies didn't have a dedicated closer down the stretch last season after Corey Knebel pitched his way out of the role, and they don't intend to anoint Kimbrel or anyone else to the job at the moment. Kimbrel has struggled when pitching in the eighth inning or earlier in the past, though not in large enough samples to be predictive.

Kyle Schwarber - Set to bat second Schwarber is expected to hit second for the Phillies this season, with offseason acquisition Trea Turner leading off, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Schwarber led off 123 times last season. He doesn't have the traditional speed for a leadoff man, and the role may have turned a few too many of his career-high 46 homers into solo shots, but his typically excellent walk rates make him a decent fit nonetheless. Turner owns a .355 career on-base percentage and also has far more speed, however, making him the obvious choice for manager Rob Thomson. Expect slightly fewer plate appearances for Schwarber this season as a result, but his overall value shouldn't change much with the move, as he'll get back in the RBI category whatever he loses in runs.
