Complicated elbow repair has Twins' Rich Hill back on the mound The 40-year-old lefthander made a nine month recovery with a modified version of Tommy John surgery.

Impact Hill allowed a run in each of the first two innings, but settled in from there to hold the Tigers scoreless in his last three frames. He generated only five swinging strikes, but still managed to rack up five punchouts on the strength of 19 called strikes on a total of 77 pitches. Hill has worked five innings in three of his five starts this season, and he's now given up more than two runs on only one occasion. He's currently projected to draw his next start Sunday against Cleveland.

Impact Hill is yet to pitch past the fifth inning this season, and the results haven't been encouraging -- he has registered more walks than strikeouts in two of his last three outings. He owns a 10:10 K:BB and 1.44 WHIP in 16 innings across four starts.

Settles for no-decision Hill hurled five innings against Cleveland on Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Hill was shaky in the first inning, giving up a run on a trio of singles and a pair of stolen bases. However, he turned things around thereafter, holding Cleveland scoreless on a pair of walks and a single over the next four frames. The southpaw ended his outing on a high note, striking out the side in the fifth inning before he was lifted. Hill threw 78 pitches in the performance, a positive sign after he tossed only 53 his last time out. The 40-year-old is still working his way back from an early-season bout of shoulder fatigue, but he could be given a longer leash moving forward if he feels good the next few days. He is next scheduled to pitch Sunday in a road contest against Detroit.

Manager Rocco Baldelli said that because the roster size drops from 30 to 28 players soon, the team wanted to make this move now to maintain its pitching depth, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. He will continue to throw while on the IL, but he would not have been ready to make a start during this weekend's series in Kansas City. With Jake Odorizzi (back) joining the rotation this weekend, he can slot in for Hill's turn and Lewis Thorpe could conceivably make one more start before potentially being replaced by Hill next week.

Battling fatigue and back issue Hill is battling both fatigue and mid-back soreness, which explains why he won't start any of the Twins' next four games, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact Hill will get an extended rest following his first start of the season, which should help the frequently-injured veteran stay healthy down the stretch after he spent much of the year recovering from elbow surgery. It's certainly positive news that he isn't dealing with any arm-related issues, and the back and fatigue problems don't appear to be particularly worrisome, as he was able to play catch Monday. It remains unclear when he'll next take the mound, however.
