Efraín Contreras - Back in action at High-A Contreras (arm) has struck out six over five shutout innings in his two outings since returning to action Aug. 4 for High-A Fort Wayne.
Impact Shortly before the All-Star break, Contreras exited his final start for Fort Wayne due to an arm injury, but he was never placed on the affiliate's 7-day injured list. He was cleared to rejoin the rotation just over two weeks later and should continue to build up his pitch count in his subsequent starts.

Austin Nola - Opportunities picking up Nola will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Giants.
Impact Nola will step in behind the plate for the fourth time in five games while fellow backstop Jorge Alfaro (knee) is tending to an injury. Alfaro isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list, but Nola may have forced his way into a timeshare at catcher. Since the beginning of July, Nola has slashed .277/.342/.323 with three doubles, a stolen base, five RBI and four runs in 21 games.

Jorge Alfaro - Expected to avoid injured list Alfaro (knee) isn't likely to need a trip to the injured list, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Alfaro was pulled from Monday's loss to San Francisco after hurting his right knee and wasn't in the lineup either of the subsequent two days. However, it doesn't appear that the injury is serious enough to warrant a trip to the IL. The Padres have a day off Thursday, and it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to return for the series opener in Washington on Friday.

Fernando Tatis Jr. - Reaches four times in rehab game Tatis went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two walks and two runs in a minor-league game with Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday.
Impact After going 0-for-5 with a pair of walks in his initial two rehab appearances, Tatis collected his first hits of 2022 and reached base four times Tuesday. He was initially expected to play center field in the contest, but he was shifted to shortstop instead due to slick outfield grass, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Tatis is still expected to see some time in center during the rehab stint, which is likely to end next week.

Tim Hill - Notches win Tuesday Hill (3-0) earned the win over San Francisco on Tuesday by striking out the only batter he faced.
Impact The Padres summoned newly acquired closer Josh Hader in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead, but he melted down and allowed three runs to score. Hill entered with the go-ahead run at second base and struck out Joc Pederson to keep the game tied, and the reliever picked up the victory when Manny Machado launched a walkoff homer in the bottom of the frame. Impact Machado picked a great time for his 20th homer of the year, as it was a walkoff blast to answer the Giants' three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning. Aside from the shortened 2020 campaign, Machado has reached the 20-homer mark in seven straight full seasons. The third baseman has gone 10-for-38 (.263) with two homers and six RBI through 10 games in August. For the season, he's slashing .290/.362/.509 with 63 RBI, 70 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 102 contests.

Impact Hader was looking for his first save as a Padre, but he labored in the ninth inning, twice issuing bases-loaded walks before giving up the tying run on a sacrifice fly. He needed 37 pitches (19 strikes) in the shaky outing, and he would also be denied the win as Tim Hill finished the frame before the Padres walked it off. Hader had a shaky stretch just before the All-Star break, and he's now given up four runs through seven innings in the second half.
