Gary Sánchez - On bench WednesdaySanchez is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Mariners.
ImpactLuis Campusano will start at catcher and Ji-Man Choi will serve as the Padres' designated hitter. Sanchez went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Tuesday's loss at Seattle, but he's registered a strong .812 OPS with 15 homers and 36 RBI across 54 games since joining San Diego on a waiver claim from the Mets in late May.

Dominic Canzone - Sitting WednesdayCanzone is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.
ImpactCanzone sat out against a couple lefties over the weekend and now finds himself on the bench against right-hander Yu Darvish. Acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, Canzone has gone 3-for-18 with two doubles to begin his Mariners career. He will have to contend with Mike Ford and Cade Marlowe for starts against righties down the stretch.

Zach Muckenhirn - Loses 40-man spotThe Mariners designated Muckenhirn for assignment Wednesday.
ImpactThe southpaw will move off the Mariners' 40-man roster with Seattle needing to clear a spot for right-hander Emerson Hancock, whose contract was selected from Double-A Arkansas ahead of his first MLB start Wednesday versus the Padres. Since being acquired in a trade with the Mets on July 3, Muckenhirn has pitched exclusively at Triple-A Tacoma, where he turned in a 9.35 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over 8.2 innings.

Devin Sweet - Sent back to Triple-AThe Mariners optioned Sweet to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.
ImpactSweet will cede his spot on Seattle's 26-man active roster to right-hander Emerson Hancock, who had his contract selected from Double-A Arkansas in advance of his first MLB start Wednesday versus the Padres. After getting called up from Tacoma shortly after the All-Star break, Sweet made just two relief appearances for Seattle, giving up two earned runs over two innings.

Emerson Hancock - Called up for MLB debutThe Mariners selected Hancock's contract from Double-A Arkansas ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Padres at T-Mobile Park.
ImpactThe 24-year-old righty will be making his MLB debut Wednesday, stepping into the Seattle rotation as a replacement for Bryan Woo (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. In order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Hancock, the Mariners designated left-hander Zach Muckenhirn for assignment. Hancock posted a strong 16.8 K-BB% in 21 starts at Arkansas this season and excelled at keeping the ball in the yard (0.83 HR/9), attributes that could allow him to find some success in his first taste of the majors. He may be worthy of a pickup on speculation, but managers in shallower leagues may want to observe Hancock's MLB debut from afar rather than including him in active lineups Wednesday.

Matt Brash - Grabs 16th hold TuesdayBrash secured his 16th hold in the Mariners' win over the Padres on Tuesday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit and a walk, threw a wild pitch and recor...
ImpactIt was an eventful frame for Brash that was reminiscent of the control issues he's gotten a better handle on this season, but the hard-throwing right-hander still managed to escape unscathed and post his seventh straight scoreless appearance. Brash has primarily filled a setup role since the trade of Paul Sewald at the deadline to the Diamondbacks, although he has seen one save chance in that span that he successfully converted. Andres Munoz is proving capable of manning the closer role for the time being, but Brash should continuing drawing plenty of hold opportunities down the stretch and also log the occasional ninth-inning assignment.
