Joe Mantiply - Works scoreless frameMantiply allowed one run and struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning in Friday's spring game against the Mariners.
ImpactMantiply hasn't allowed a run over two Cactus League outings. With Arizona's closer situation described as "fluid" by manager Torey Lovullo, Mantiply is part of crew that could get late-inning work. Mark Melancon is likely the frontrunner, but he was roughed up in his spring debut, which focuses speculation about Mantiply, Kevin Ginkel and Andrew Chafin. Mantiply had a strong season in 2022, sporting a 2.85 ERA and 22 holds; however, he blew six of eight save opportunities, as Lovullo auditioned several arms when Melancon lost control of the job.

Tommy Henry - Better in second outingHenry allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four over three innings of relief in Friday's spring game against Seattle.
ImpactHenry bounced back from an unpleasant performance his first time out in the Cactus League. He allowed five runs over 1.1 innings as a starter last Sunday. Even though Henry allowed a couple of runs and two extra-base hits over his first two innings, the left-hander improved and retired the side in order during his final inning. He told Jack Sommers of SI.com that the pitch clock had him huffing and puffing. Henry is in the mix for the No. 5 starter job.

Tommy La Stella - Shoulder still soreLa Stella will miss at least another 10 days with right shoulder soreness, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ImpactThe first announcement of La Stella's arm issues -- which came Feb. 24 -- suggested he'd miss less than a week, but this is clearly a larger issue for the veteran infielder. Assuming he spends most of his time at second base or designated hitter, La Stella shouldn't need too much time to ramp up for the regular season once his shoulder improves.

Tom Murphy - Solid early in spring trainingMurphy went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactMurphy is reacclimating after seeing his 2022 season end in June due to shoulder surgery, and Friday's breakout performance against the Diamondbacks might be considered his official welcome back party after a quiet first three games at the plate. Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports Mariners starting pitcher Marco Gonzales, who had Murphy as his battery mate for the first time since last season Friday, is especially excited about getting back what he considers a valuable resource. "He's just an energy source in our dugout," said Gonzales. "He's able to kind of pull the mask down and be really serious, too, which is good. So he knows what I need to do to be successful. And I think even sometimes better than I myself do, and so to have that voice out there is just priceless for me."

ImpactGonzales pounded 33 of his 48 offerings in for strikes while working on what would be the sixth pitch in his arsenal, a slider. Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports catcher Tom Murphy came away particularly impressed with Gonzales' performance overall after the left-hander was bounced around for four earned runs on five hits over two innings by the Angels in his first Cactus League start. "I saw a great adjustment," said Murphy. "I felt his fastball command wasn't usual Marco today, then he just came out and just started pounding his breaking ball. For him to do that mid game, that's why Marco is so good at going seven innings."
