The former starter is capable of going deeper into games than most openers, whether that happens Friday could depend on how he's faring. Brant Hurter is a likely candidate for bulk relief Friday.

Trey Sweeney - Contract selected ahead of debutThe Tigers selected Sweeney's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

ImpactAcquired from the Dodgers in last month's Jack Flaherty trade, Sweeney has slashed .267/.345/.450 with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases over 107 contests at the Triple-A level this season. The 24-year-old has played shortstop almost exclusively in the minors and should see most of the reps there against right-handers, with Javier Baez perhaps limited to a short-side platoon.

Easton Lucas - Dropped from 40-man rosterThe Tigers designated Lucas for assignment Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

ImpactLucas will lose his spot on the 40-man roster with the Tigers selecting the contracts of Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. Lucas hasn't pitched for Detroit since July 28. The 27-year-old has a 10.29 ERA in MLB this season but posted a 3.51 ERA across 33.1 innings with Triple-A Toledo, where he'll likely remain if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Jace Jung - Officially added to rosterThe Tigers selected Jung's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

ImpactThe first-round pick is set to make his major-league debut after hitting .257/.377/.454 with 14 home runs and 60 RBI over 414 plate appearances this season with Toledo. A left-handed batter, Jung will be the Tigers' primary third baseman versus righties, but it's unclear whether the team also plans to play him regularly against southpaws.
