Jed Lowrie - Not starting FridayLowrie (hand) is not starting Friday against the Astros.
ImpactIt was reported Thursday that Lowrie was managing hand pain that arose from an awkward swing. He appeared off the bench to log a double in two at-bats during Thursday's loss, but the issue appears to still be bothering the infielder, as he's set to sit against right-hander Brandon Bielak. It remains to be seen if he could be available off the bench Friday. Mark Canha moves to designated hitter as Seth Brown draws the start in right field.

Trevor Rosenthal - Follow-up exam upcomingRosenthal will soon be re-examined by the doctor that performed his surgery for a torn hip labrum earlier this year, the Associated Press reports.
ImpactThe veteran closer was never able to throw a pitch for the Athletics after signing a one-year deal with Oakland during the offseason. Rosenthal turned 31 in late May and will be coming off a major procedure going into next season, so it remains to be seen whether the A's or any other organization will be inclined to make anything more than a modest financial commitment.

Mitch Moreland - Gets cortisone shot for wristMoreland (wrist) received a cortisone shot last week and still could require surgery this offseason, the team's official site reports.
ImpactThe veteran landed on the injured list due to a tendon issue in his wrist Aug. 31, and he's running out of time to make a return before the end of the regular season. Team trainer Nick Paparesta acknowledged the need for a possible surgery "down the road", although the team and Moreland are set to wait out the effects of the cortisone shot for the time being before any further course of action is determined.
