Nolan Gorman - Too many whiffs Gorman has gone 2-for-13 with a double, six strikeouts and a walk over five Grapefruit League games.

Impact Gorman struck out at a 31.9 percent clip in 2023, so it's not unusual to see him whiffing a lot. He's still expected to have a starting role in the Cardinals' lineup, likely at designated hitter, but he could also split time with utility man Brendan Donovan at second base with Tommy Edman (wrist) likely to be in center field once he's ready to play. Gorman has slugged 41 homers over 208 career games, offering solid power while being an anchor on batting average.

Andre Pallante - Pitching well in spring Pallante has pitched three scoreless innings over three appearances in Grapefruit League play.

Impact He's allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two. Pallante struggled to a 4.76 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 43:30 K:BB over 62 relief appearances in 2023 after splitting time between the rotation and bullpen in 2022. Pallante added 13 holds last year, but his poor play saw him in a low-leverage role to end the campaign. He'll be looking to get back into the late-innings mix in a crowded bullpen competition for the Cardinals.

Sonny Gray - Departs outing with injury Gray was removed from Monday's Grapefruit League start versus the Nationals in the second inning with an apparent injury, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Impact Gray was facing his fifth batter of the game but was pulled after appearing to injure himself on a pitch to Nick Senzel. He walked off the field after a visit from the trainer, manager Oliver Marmol and pitching coach Dusty Blake. Gray yielded one hit and struck out one over 1.2 scoreless frames before exiting. The Cardinals figure to update his condition soon.

Ryan Helsley - Solid to begin spring Helsley has allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over two innings across two Grapefruit League appearances.

Impact Helsley enters 2024 with a tentative grasp on the closing role in St. Louis. A forearm injury derailed his 2023, though he was solid with 14 saves and a 2.45 ERA over 36.2 innings last season. The Cardinals have retooled their bullpen a bit, but Helsley should remain the favorite for saves to begin the campaign.

Kyle Gibson - Lit up in spring debut Gibson allowed three runs on three hits and struck out two over two innings in his first Grapefruit League appearance of the season.

Impact Gibson was tagged for two home runs in his first spring start. The veteran starter had a 4.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 157:55 K:BB over 192 innings for the Orioles last season before signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals in November. Gibson can still eat innings to an extent, but the results are likely to be mediocre -- his ERA has been over 4.50 in four of the last five seasons.

Riley O'Brien - Auditioning well in spring O'Brien has allowed three hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three scoreless innings in Grapefruit League play.

Impact O'Brien was acquired in a trade with the Mariners in November and added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster. So far, he's making a good case for a bullpen spot in 2024. Last season was his first good one at the Triple-A level -- he had a 2.29 ERA and saved 15 games for Triple-A Tacoma, but it remains to be seen how he'll adjust to major-league hitters in a larger sample.

Iván Herrera - Managing shoulder issue Herrera isn't starting Sunday's spring game against the Marlins as scheduled due to shoulder pain, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Impact The 23-year-old has just 24 big-league games under his belt but is poised to share catching duties with Willson Contreras in 2024. It's unclear at this point if the injury is expected to affect Herrera's availability for Opening Day.
