Dylan Carlson - Taking light batting practice Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Carlson (oblique/ankle) is taking light batting practice and doing defensive work, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Impact Carlson has been sidelined since mid-August due to both a left oblique strain and a lingering left ankle injury, but he seems to have a good shot at returning to the active roster in the closing weeks of the regular season. He's posted a disappointing .219/.318/.333 batting line with five homers and three steals across 76 games this year for St. Louis.

Lars Nootbaar - Sitting against lefty Nootbaar is absent from the lineup Thursday at Atlanta.

Impact Tyler O'Neill, Tommy Edman and Jordan Walker will start across the outfield as the Cardinals match up against left-hander Max Fried. Nootbaar has posted an .855 OPS in 317 plate appearances this year against righties, compared to a .704 OPS in 96 plate appearances versus southpaws.

He's bounced around defensively as usual, seeing time at second base, shortstop and center field in that span. The speedy utility man is up to 23 thefts on 25 attempts this year while adding a .246/.310/.416 slash line, 12 home runs, 42 RBI and 61 runs scored through 116 games.

Impact The steal was Burleson's first of the season, which came on his second attempt. The outfielder has had a tough time breaking into the Cardinals' lineup on a regular basis, as the team has typically used the designated hitter spot to get some rest for lineup regulars. Through 311 plate appearances this season, Burleson has a .245/.297/.399 slash line with eight home runs, 33 RBI and 31 runs scored. Impact Contreras recorded an RBI in each of the first and third innings before slugging a solo homer in the seventh. The long ball was his fourth over his past six contests, a stretch during which he's gone 7-for-23 with seven runs and seven RBI. Contreras needs three more long balls this season to reach 20 for the fifth time in his career.

Masyn Winn - Belts first big-league homer Winn went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday against Atlanta in an 11-6 victory.

Impact All nine offensive starters for St. Louis recorded at least one hit in the contest, and Winn's was a solo homer to left field in the sixth inning. Impact After snapping a 16-game homer drought with a pair of long balls Tuesday, Gorman went deep again Wednesday, smashing a 414-foot, three-run shot in the eighth inning to cap a big offensive night by the Cardinals. Prior to the two-game power surge, Gorman had been struggling mightily, batting .169 with a 40.6 percent strikeout rate since the start of August. The punchouts haven't gone away -- Gorman has six over his past three contests -- but it's hard to complain about those since he's knocked in eight runs over that stretch.

Dakota Hudson - Earns win despite rough finish Hudson (6-1) earned the win over Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters over five innings.

Impact Hudson was staked to an early 6-0 lead before yielding two runs in the fourth inning. He was still ahead 7-2 entering the sixth but couldn't record an out in that frame, allowing four straight baserunners -- three of whom crossed the plate -- before his departure. Hudson nonetheless collected the win, his fifth over his past seven outings. He's settled into a spot in the Cardinals' rotation and should remain there for the rest of the campaign, as he's posted a passable 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 41.2 innings across seven starts since the beginning of August.
