Adam Wainwright - Activated from 15-day injured list Wainwright (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Monday.

Impact Wainwright will return to the Cardinals' rotation after missing nearly three weeks with a right shoulder strain. The 41-year-old will start Monday versus the Diamondbacks, though he's only expected to throw 65 pitches in the outing. On the season, Wainwright owns a 7.66 ERA and 1.99 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 51.2 innings in 11 starts with St. Louis. In a corresponding move, left-handed reliever Zack Thompson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

He's at a .238/.343/.362 slash line with five home runs, 23 RBI, 25 runs scored and three stolen bases over 216 plate appearances. If Lars Nootbaar (heel) misses any time after exiting Sunday's game, Carlson would be the logical replacement in center field.

Impact Montgomery still managed to go six innings for the seventh time in his last eight starts despite tying his season-high with seven runs allowed. He surrendered a two-run blast to Cody Bellinger in the opening frame before being pummeled for five runs in the third during which he gave up four hits and had both his walks. It ended an impressive run for Montgomery after going nine consecutive starts allowing three runs or fewer. He now holds a 3.37 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 105:31 K:BB in 115 innings. For right now, he's lined up to face the Cubs next but that could change with him being a sell piece for the Cardinals at the trade deadline.
