Nolan Arenado - Battling back tightness Arenado was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Astros with lower back tightness, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Arenado is officially listed as day-to-day, so his injury doesn't seem to be too severe. However, it's still possible he sits out for another game to recover. The 32-year-old third baseman was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer before leaving the game.

Ryan Helsley - Cleared for throwing Helsley (forearm) was cleared to begin a throwing program Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Helsley got the go-ahead after visiting with a specialist Tuesday. He has a lot of buildup ahead, beginning with flat-ground work, but the hard-throwing right-hander should be able to return to the Cardinals before the end of July if all goes well from this point forward. Jordan Hicks has taken over the closer role in St. Louis since Helsley went down June 12 with a forearm strain.

Impact The shortstop launched a solo shot off Framber Valdez in the third inning -- the first homer the lefty had allowed since May 15. DeJong has four of his 12 long balls on the season in his last 12 games, a stretch in which he's slashing .267/.277/.578 despite a 40.4 percent strikeout rate that portends some serious regression ahead.

Jordan Hicks - Notches fifth save Hicks struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Astros.
Impact The right-hander topped out at 99.5 mph with his final pitch as he caught Jeremy Pena looking. Hicks has converted saves in five straight appearances since taking over the closer role from Ryan Helsley (forearm), relegating Giovanny Gallegos to setup duties. The notoriously wild Hicks, who has a 13.5 percent walk rate for his career, also hasn't issued a free pass in six straight games, and over the last month he sports a 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB through 12.2 innings. If he can maintain that kind of control, he might well hang onto ninth-inning duties the rest of the year.

Jordan Montgomery - Sharp in fifth win Montgomery (5-7) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Astros. He struck out six.
Impact The southpaw continues to roll. He delivered his fourth straight quality start with another strong performance, and the chronically unlucky Montgomery has managed to get the win in three of them -- and impressive feat for a pitcher who's never recorded double-digit wins in a season. After posting a 1.71 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 30:6 K:BB through 31.2 innings in June, he'll take plenty of momentum into his next outing -- which is likely to be a weekend matchup in St. Louis against his former club, the Yankees.

Packy Naughton - Undergoes surgery Naughton underwent surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left elbow Monday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact The good news is that Naughton didn't require UCL repair surgery, but the 27-year-old southpaw is facing an extended absence nonetheless. Naughton most likely won't return until 2024, putting an end to his season after throwing just five scoreless innings in April.
