Lars Nootbaar - Dealing with jammed thumb Nootbaar's absence from the lineup Saturday against the Blue Jays is due to a jammed thumb, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Those who bought into the hype surrounding Nootbaar over the winter didn't want to see him on the bench in the second game of the season. An injury isn't exactly a better outcome, but thankfully this one doesn't seem too serious. He suffered the injury when sliding into third base on Opening Day, but imaging came back clear and he was able to swing Friday. He'll get the day off to manage some residual pain but does not appear to be at risk of a trip to the injured list. Alec Burleson starts in left field in his absence.

Lars Nootbaar - Heads to bench Nootbaar will sit Saturday against the Blue Jays.
Impact Nootbaar received plenty of attention from fantasy drafters over the winter and followed that up by batting second and reaching base three times in the season opener. The Cardinals have a crowded outfield, however, and they'll give Alec Burleson the start in left field in the second game of the season. Exactly how often Nootbaar is in the lineup will go a low way toward determining his fantasy value this season, and it's not a good sign in that respect that he's on the bench already even with a righty (Kevin Gausman) on the mound for the opposition. It may take a week or two to get a clear sense of how often each Cardinal will find themselves in the lineup.

Impact Graceffo makes the jump to the Triple-A level after flourishing to a 2.97 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 139:28 K:BB over 139.1 innings (26 starts) last season between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield. The 23-year-old right-hander might prove to be a steal for the Cardinals as a fifth-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He's tracking toward debuting for St. Louis in 2023.

Masyn Winn - Opening year at Triple-A Winn is beginning the 2023 season at Triple-A Memphis.
Impact There was some thought that Winn might repeat Double-A for a bit, but he showed so well this spring in Cardinals camp that he's getting the boost to Triple-A just 10 days after his 21st birthday. The toolsy young shortstop slashed .333/.393/.556 with two home runs, two doubles, two triples and four stolen bases over 18 games (61 plate appearances) in the Grapefruit League. He seems certain to make his MLB debut at some point this summer.

Tres Barrera - On active roster at Memphis Barrera (knee) is on the active roster at Triple-A Memphis ahead of their season opener Friday.
Impact Barrera was sidelined due to knee soreness over the final week of the Grapefruit League schedule, but he's ready now to suit up for Memphis and could be a candidate for a quick call-up to St. Louis if Willson Contreras (knee) requires an IL stint. Impact Arenado was one of five Cardinals to post multiple hits in the back-and-forth game. The third baseman battled a minor hand injury after he was hit by a pitch at the World Baseball Classic, but he appears to be in great form to open 2023. Arenado is expected to bat cleanup throughout the year as he looks to follow up a strong 2022 that saw him slash .293/.358/.533 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI over 148 contests.

Impact Goldschmidt's always had pretty good speed and instincts for a first baseman. Jordan Walker - Notches hit, RBI in MLB debut Walker went 1-for-5 with an RBI in Thursday's loss to the Blue Jays.
Impact The 20-year-old kicked the door down in camp and it didn't take long for him to make his presence felt in the majors. Walker shot a single up the middle in the second inning, later drove in a run on a force out and also showed off his arm in the field with a throw clocked at 100.2 mph, according to MLB Pipeline. Walker was batting eighth against righty Alek Manoah, but it's possible he moves up in the order against left-handed pitching.

Impact Donovan served as the Cardinals' Opening Day leadoff hitter and did his job setting the table against Alek Manoah and company.
