Hunter Strickland - Earns fifth saveStrickland picked up the save Sunday against St. Louis, tossing a perfect ninth inning in a 6-3 victory.
ImpactStrickland got Nolan Arenado, Nolan Gorman and Tommy Edman to pop out in foul territory and needed just nine pitches to close out the game. It was his first save since June 28 and first save opportunity since blowing consecutive chances at the beginning of July. He and Alexis Diaz will likely continue to receive the bulk of the save chances for Cincinnati.

Paul Goldschmidt - Two more homers SundayGoldschmidt went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in a 6-3 loss Sunday in Cincinnati.
ImpactGoldschmidt was the only player to get a hit off Tyler Mahle, and he took the starter deep twice, accounting for all the Cardinals' runs. He's now homered in four straight games -- five if you include his All-Star Game blast. It appears that the only thing that can stop Goldschmidt right now is the Canadian government, as he won't be able to be with the team due to the COVID-19 vaccination requirement in Canada when St. Louis begins a two-game series in Toronto on Tuesday. He'll rejoin the Cardinals when they return stateside Friday in Washington.

Miles Mikolas - Ineffective in lossMikolas (7-8) took the loss Sunday in Cincinnati, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings.
ImpactAll six runs against Mikolas came in the third and fourth innings. He allowed singles to three of the first four batters and, following a sacrifice fly, Joey Votto tagged him for a three-run, two-out blast in the third. In the next frame, a walk and two singles led to two more runs. It was the first time Mikolas allowed more than three earned runs in a start since June 3. He's now given up six homers in his last 30.2 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend in Washington.

Tyler Mahle - Quality start in returnMahle (4-7) earned the win Sunday over St. Louis, striking out five in six innings while allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.
ImpactMahle took the mound for the first time since July 2 and did enough to get the win over the Cardinals. Outside of Paul Goldschmidt, Mahle held St. Louis hitless. It just so happened that both Goldschmidt hits were long balls, accounting for all three of the Cardinals' runs. Mahle was fairly efficient, needing only 79 pitches to complete the six frames, but also somewhat erratic, throwing only 47 of those pitches for strikes. Over his last eight starts, he has a 2.81 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 57:16 K:BB in 51.1 innings. He'll likely start next weekend against Baltimore in what could be his final start for the Redlegs.
