Impact As Weaver points out, Taveras is the third member of the Rangers to have issues with his left side in the Cactus League, as Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi have also had the injury during the spring season. Bubba Thompson -- who was scratched Saturday with leg tightness -- will take his place in the lineup. Taveras will be evaluated in the coming days, and he should be considered day-to-day for now.

Impact Mathias was bumped from the 40-man roster to create space for reliever Will Smith, who was signed by the Rangers on Saturday. Weaver goes into great detail as to what the transaction means for several players on the roster, including Smith, who was in a battle to make the team in a utility role. While he can't provide the right-handed bench bat that Mathias did, Smith's ability to play shortstop gives the Rangers insurance that Mathias could not supply. Smith, who came to Texas in the Joey Gallo trade, posted a .197/.307/.249 line over 253 plate appearances in 2022.

Impact Thompson made a noteworthy contribution in his MLB debut last season, swiping 18 bases over 55 games. However, it's unclear if there's a spot for him on the major-league roster to start 2023. He has the most center-field experience among the Rangers' depth outfielders, so he could give Leody Taveras a break when needed, but the team may want him to get regular playing time at Triple-A Round Rock. In that case, right fielder Adolis Garcia would cover center when Taveras sits.
