Not yet throwing off mound Padres manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Hill (finger) isn't progressing as quickly as hoped and has yet to resume throwing bullpen sessions, MLB.com reports.
Impact Since landing on the 15-day injured list Aug. 2 with a sprained left ring finger, Hill has been limited to playing catch with tape on his injured digit. Melvin suggested that Hill will soon be able to remove the tape from his finger and start throwing off a mound, but the southpaw is still probably a week or more away from returning from the IL.

Impact Hill presumably picked up the injury during his relief appearance in Tuesday, when he retired one batter while giving up one run on one hit and one walk in a win over the Rockies. The Padres called up Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to give the team another left-handed option in the bullpen while Hill is on the mend.

Effective this spring Hill tossed 8.2 innings in Cactus League play, allowing three runs on six hits while posting an 11:3 K:BB.
Impact Despite his results this spring, Hill has never been much of a strikeout pitcher, and he posted a career-worst 4.7 K/9 last season. The southpaw is locked into a role in the Padres' bullpen, however, and he'll open the campaign as the team's lone lefty reliever not named Josh Hader since Drew Pomeranz (elbow) and Jose Castillo (shoulder) are expected to begin the season on the injured list.

Inks one-year deal Hill signed a one-year, $1.85 million contract with the Padres on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact Hill posted a 3.56 ERA in 2022 but managed just 25 strikeouts over 48 innings and missed some time with a shoulder problem. It's possible the heavy usage over the years in his age-32 season just caught up to him, but the Padres will hope he can return to form in 2023.
