Impact Though Jansen is on the bench Wednesday, he started at either catcher or designated hitter in each of the previous four games and appears to be moving into a quasi-everyday role. With the lefty-hitting Brandon Belt having now hit the bench in two straight matchups against right-handed pitching, Jansen could end up seeing the bulk of the work behind the plate, which would allow Alejandro Kirk to serve mainly as a DH.

Impact The veteran center fielder continues to stay healthy and relatively productive to begin his first season with the Blue Jays. Daulton Varsho - Launches third homer Varsho went 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run home run in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Red Sox.
Impact The Blue Jays did all their scoring in the fifth inning, with Varsho's blast off Tanner Houck giving them a 6-3 lead that Yusei Kikuchi and the bullpen couldn't protect. The multi-hit performance was Varsho's first since April 12, and a 6-for-61 slump in between those efforts has dragged his slash line down to .198/.295/.330. The 26-year-old has kept his fantasy value from completely cratering with three homers, five steals, nine RBI and 14 runs in 29 games on the season.

Yusei Kikuchi - Stumbles against BoSox Kikuchi didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Red Sox, coughing up five runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out two without walking a batter.
Impact The southpaw got hit hard, as five of the nine hits off him went for extra bases including homers by Christian Arroyo and Masataka Yoshida. Kikuchi is once again having trouble keeping the ball in the park -- after serving up 23 homers in 100.2 innings in 2022 (a 2.06 HR/9), he's already been taken deep eight times in 31.1 innings to begin 2023 (a 2.30 HR/9), and only some good fortune has kept his 4.02 ERA from being closer to his 5.44 FIP. He could be a risky play in his next outing, likely to come this weekend on the road against the surprising Pirates.
