'I made the show, Dad!': Inside Victor Scott II's debut — and his family's mad dash When Scott II dug into a big-league batter's box for the first time, he heard a sharp whistle that let him know his father was in the crowd.

Logs steal in debut Scott went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Dodgers.

Impact Scott got aboard on an error in the fifth inning and immediately showcased the speed that has had him on the fast-track to the majors. He'll still need to show his bat is up to the challenge now that the games count. Scott hit .317 in spring training, but the regular season is a different beast. He'll get an extended audition while Tommy Edman (wrist) and Dylan Carlson (shoulder) are out. Scott shouldn't be too far away from a full-time major-league gig, but it wouldn't be surprising if he needs time at Triple-A since he has skipped over that level of the minors due to the Cardinals' injury problems.

Could be needed with Carlson out Scott is a candidate to join the major-league roster in the wake of Dylan Carlson's (shoulder) injury, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Impact Carlson injured his left shoulder and also banged up his hip and ankle during a collision in the outfield with teammate Jordan Walker on Monday. The seriousness of Carlson's injury isn't known yet, but if he needs to miss time it would further deplete a Cardinals outfield that's already missing Tommy Edman (wrist) and Lars Nootbaar (ribs). It could create an opening for Scott, who was reassigned to minor-league camp over the weekend following an impressive showing this spring. Scott is a worthy speculative late-round fantasy target or waiver-wire add.

Moves to minors camp The Cardinals reassigned Scott to minor-league camp Saturday.

Impact Scott entered camp with a very low chance of making the Opening Day roster after finishing last season in Double-A. However, he showed plenty of promise with a .316 batting average and four stolen bases over 10 games this spring. The speedy 23-year-old will likely open the season in Triple-A Memphis.

MARCH 23 • ROTOWIRE

Starting again in center field Scott is starting in center field and batting leadoff for the Cardinals in Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Twins.

Impact It's the third time in the team's last four games that Scott has been in center field and at the top of the batting order. Also notable is that Wednesday's lineup features Dylan Carlson in left field, marking the first time those two players have occupied those positions in the same game. Carlson has been the Cards' presumed starter in center field while Tommy Edman (wrist) is out, with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak last week downplaying the possibility of Scott making the Opening Day roster. However, the club seems to be leaving the door ajar for Scott with the way he's turned heads this spring. The speedy outfielder is slashing .370/.469/.444 in Grapefruit League play and is 7-for-11 with two steals, an RBI and four runs scored over his last three contests.

Turning heads with speed Scott has gone 3-for-15 with three walks, a triple and two stolen bases over six Grapefruit League games.

Impact Scott's speed has allowed him to log four runs as well despite the Cardinals' relatively anemic spring offense. The 23-year-old combined for 95 stolen bases over 132 games between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield in 2023, with speed being his No. 1 trait. He also has a good hit tool and reliable plate discipline. Scott will need to be tested at Triple-A Memphis first, but a 2024 debut is not out of the question, while a larger major-league role is expected to come in 2025 -- unless he forces the issue with his bat.

Runs way to Double-A The Cardinals promoted Scott from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield on Monday.

Impact The 22-year-old outfielder will make the jump to the Texas League after he terrorized opposing pitchers on the basepaths -- he stole a minor-league-leading 50 bags on 57 attempts -- while holding his own at the plate (.757 OPS, 9.5 BB%, 16.9 K%, 121 wRC+ in 308 plate appearances). Scott will need to continue to get on base at a steady clip against upper-level minor-league pitching in order to profile as a potential everyday player in the majors, but at the very least, his premium speed should allow him to emerge as a useful weapon off the bench.

Showcasing premium speed Scott is slashing .295/.376/.423 with two home runs and 48 steals on 54 attempts through 60 games with High-A Peoria.

Impact The 22-year-old outfielder was a fifth-round pick in last year's draft, but it seems like the Cardinals may have gotten a steal. A left-handed hitter, Scott is one of the better athletes in all the minors and is a top-of-the-scale runner, so his stolen-base total carries more weight than that of many lower-level prospects who take advantage of batteries that can't control the run game. Scott's .129 ISO represents an area of weakness, but his 16.1 percent strikeout rate and 9.3 percent walk rate are respectable marks, even for an older hitter in the Florida State League.
