Impact Avila continues to incorporate more baseball activities into his rehab regimen as he works his way back from calf strains in both of his legs. He appears to be further along in his recovery than Yan Gomes (oblique), who has yet to resume swinging a bat since landing on the injured list. Tres Barrera will serve as Washington's No. 1 catcher until either Avila or Gomes makes it back from the IL.

Brad Hand - Takes loss Wednesday Hand (5-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk while striking out none across two innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Marlins.
Impact Hand was called upon to to keep the game tied at one in the ninth inning, and he did so without allowing a baserunner. However, he ran into trouble in his second inning of work, walking a batter with one out before allowing a double and subsequent sacrifice fly to take the loss. Though his trouble came with the runner starting on second base in extra innings, Hand has now allowed three earned runs across his last 7.1 innings while also being tagged with a loss and a blown save in that span. Even so, he has a 2.63 ERA with a 40:16 K:BB across 41 innings on the season.

The Nationals planned to hold Strasburg back from throwing for a few days, but after he played catch Tuesday without discomfort, he was cleared to get back on the mound. The minor hiccup in the rehab process shouldn't affect Strasburg's timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, though the Nationals probably won't pinpoint a target date for the right-hander until he's ready to start a rehab assignment.
