Impact This is going to be a difficult situation for fantasy managers considering the Bears don't need to activate Montgomery off injured reserve until later in the afternoon Sunday. It's a bit surprising the star running back is even considered possibly available for Monday's contest given the Bears will have their bye take place in Week 10, theoretically giving the 24-year-old an ample amount of time to recover from his scary Week 4 knee injury, but this does fit nicely with the reported four-week recovery timeline. It's also worth noting primary backup Damien Williams (knee) has already been ruled out ahead of Monday's contest. Regardless of whether or not Montgomery plays, expect rookie Khalil Herbert to be a factor at least somewhat given his impressive figures as Montgomery's fill-in (388 total yards across four games).

Returns to practice Bears head coach Matt Nagy confirmed Thursday that Montgomery (knee) has been designated to return from injured reserve, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
Impact The move clears Montgomery to return to practice and gives the Bears a 21-day window in which they can either add him to back to the 53-man roster or keep him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Since Montgomery hasn't been on the field since suffering a left knee sprain Oct. 3, he could be a limited participant in his return to practice. The Bears will track his progress in practice over the next three days before determining whether he'll be ready to go for Monday's game in Pittsburgh, but if Montgomery remains on IR for another week, Khalil Herbert and Damien Williams (knee) -- if healthy -- will share backfield duties for Chicago.
