QB battle winding down Head coach Sean Payton hopes to name a starting quarterback before the preseason finale Aug. 28 against Arizona, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Impact Taysom Hill started the preseason opener last week against Baltimore, and Winston will get his chance Monday night against Jacksonville. While neither has separated himself as the clear-cut frontrunner up to this point, Winston led two TD drives in five possessions during last week's exhibition game while Hill didn't lead the team to any points over three of his own drives. A respectable performance with the first-team offense Monday could make Winston the heavy favorite to come away with the starting nod -- at least for Week 1 -- though there's also speculation that Winston could be given the job if for no other reason than to keep Hill available for the gadget plays he's become famous for.

Impact After coming off the sideline in relief of Taysom Hill in preseason Week 1, Winston will get the starting nod in the Saints' second exhibition. In last Saturday's game at Baltimore, Winston fared better in the box score and in the scoring column, leading New Orleans to two TDs in five possessions, while Hill managed no points in three drives. With more first stringers (Alvin Kamara, for example) expected to play Monday, Winston may be working with close to the expected Week 1 starting lineup from the first snap.

Impact Winston played the last five possessions of the first half after Taysom Hill got the first three. Each quarterback had an interception, but Wintson also led two touchdown drives -- the second of which he capped with an eight-yard pass to Lil'Jordan Humphrey in the two-minute drill -- while Hill failed to deliver any points. It's possible Winston will get the opportunity to start against Jacksonville's first-team defense in Week 2 of preseason, but the quarterback competition between him and Hill remains far from settled.

While Hill practiced with the starters for the first two days of training camp, Winston had those honors Saturday, and the 27-year-old reportedly has impressed Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., who deemed Winston a "quick study." However, there remains no substantial evidence to suggest either Winston or Hill is in the lead for the starting job, and it's possible that won't change until the end of the preseason.

Impact It's possible that Hill's long-standing tenure with New Orleans played a role in him opening training camp with the starters. As both he and Winston should get plenty of reps with the first-team offense as the summer unfolds, fantasy managers need to keep tabs on who is favored to open Week 1 in the starting lineup given the contrasting styles of play between the two quarterbacks. Case in point: All but one of Hill's throws seemed to travel less than eight yards during Thursday's practice, while Winston sent one deep on his very first pass attempt in team drills and he reportedly finished the day with a number of impressive completions on deep passes, including a 60-yard touchdown to Deonte Harris.
