Falcons draft USC WR London, get much-needed big-play threat

The Atlanta Falcons continued to emphasize their passing game by selecting Southern California wide receiver Drake London with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft

Bolsters Falcons WR corps The Falcons have signed Hodge to a one-year contract.

Impact In 16 games with the Lions last season, the 27-year-old recorded 13 receptions on 27 targets for 157 yards. Hodge joins an Atlanta wideout corps currently headed by Olamide Zaccheaus, but the team is far from done in terms of adding depth at the position. With that in mind, it remains to be seen where Hodge settles into the equation for targets, but as things stand, he should have an opportunity to compete for a role in the Falcons offense, which is now helmed by QB Marcus Mariota.

Small offensive role in finale Hodge logged eight offensive snaps during Sunday's 37-30 win over the Packers.

Impact After a big day in Seattle in Week 17, Hodge returned to more of a special-teams role with Josh Reynolds reinstated from the COVID list. This was nothing new for him, considering he only topped 13 percent of the offensive snaps in one game following Detroit's Week 9 bye. As a result, Hodge will finish the 2021 campaign with 13 receptions on 27 targets for 157 scoreless yards. The Alcorn State product is now set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the league year with no certainty that he will return to Detroit in 2022.

Second-leading receiver Hodge caught five passes for 76 yards on 10 targets against Seattle on Sunday.

Impact The 76 yards are a career high for Hodge, who stepped into a starting role with Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond unavailable. Those two will both return to the starting lineup once they're cleared to return to the field, but at least Hodge probably solidified himself as Detroit's fourth option in the wide receiver rotation as they prepare to face Green Bay in Week 18.

Since Detroit's Week 9 bye, Hodge hasn't logged more than 13 percent of the Lions' offensive snaps in any of the team's seven games, turning in just two receptions for 30 yards on three targets.

Impact Hodge was Cleveland's No. 3 receiver for part of last season, and he now finds himself on arguably the weakest receiver depth chart in the league. Of course, he was waived for a reason, and he's caught only 17 passes in 39 regular-season games. Hodge most likely will be a backup and special-teams player, even with the receiver-needy Lions.
