Bowen Byram - Produces assist in loss Byram logged an assist and blocked three shots in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Devils in Prague.
Impact Byram helped out on Owen Power's third-period goal. In addition to the assist, Byram led the Sabres with 24:52 of ice time, more than Power's 23:27 and Rasmus Dahlin's 22:48. All three blueliners are likely to play a big role this season, but Byram has arguably the most to gain after producing a combined 29 points in 73 contests between the Avalanche and the Sabres last year. Byram is expected to see more consistent power-play usage in 2024-25, which could help him push well beyond the 30-point mark, assuming he can stay healthy.

JJ Peterka - Snags assist Friday Peterka logged an assist, two shots on goal and a minus-2 rating in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Devils in Prague.
Impact Peterka is a breakout candidate this year after producing 50 points (seven on the power play) despite the Sabres' down year as a team in 2023-24. While they lost their season opener, Peterka was able to contribute by setting up Owen Power's third-period goal. Peterka is getting the first chance to fill the vacancy on the top line created by the Sabres' buyout of Jeff Skinner over the summer, and that spot alongside Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch could be a fruitful one.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel - Suffers lower-body injury Aube-Kubel sustained a lower-body injury during Friday's 4-1 loss to New Jersey. He's unlikely to be available for Saturday's rematch versus the Devils, according to Lance Lysowski...
Impact The exact nature of Aube-Kubel's injury isn't known, but he was seen wearing a brace on his left leg after Friday's loss, per Lysowski. Aube-Kubel was limited to 5:45 of ice time and wasn't on the ice for the third period. If the 28-year-old does play Saturday, it would likely be as a member of the fourth line. It's not known who would draw into the lineup if Aube-Kubel is unavailable, but it might be Peyton Krebs, who recorded four goals, 17 points, 67 PIM and 108 hits in 80 outings with Buffalo in 2023-24 but was a healthy scratch Friday.

Impact Power is well on his way to surpassing his career-high six goals he put up last season and should once again be capable of reaching the 30-point threshold. The blueliner would certainly benefit from running Buffalo's No. 2 power-play unit but may have to share those responsibilities with Bowen Byram -- especially with Rasmus Dahlin firmly entrenched with the No. 1 group.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen - Underwhelms in opener Luukkonen gave up three goals on 22 shots in a 4-1 defeat to New Jersey on Friday.
Impact Luukkonen wasn't particularly busy considering he only faced 22 shots, significantly below the team's average shots allowed from last season (29.3). Still, it's just the first game of a long season and is too early to start writing the 25-year-old Finn off just yet. He still looks set to see the bulk of the workload for Buffalo this year. Devon Levi served as the backup Friday and could get the starting nod in the second half of the back-to-back against the Devils on Saturday.
