Kent Johnson - Practices on top line Johnson practiced on the top line during Thursday's practice, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.
Impact Johnson was called up Thursday after Wednesday's disappointing loss in Montreal. Blue Jackets head coach Pascal Vincent put his lines in a blender and came up with Johnson in a top-six role upon his return to Columbus following an impressive five goals and 15 points in 10 games at at AHL Cleveland. Columbus desperately needs offense, and Johnson could deliver. Vincent added that they don't want Johnson yo-yoing between the NHL and AHL, indicating he's here to stay.

Cole Sillinger - Out Friday Sillinger (lower body) will not suit up Friday against the Senators, Jeff Svoboda of the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
Impact Sillinger was injured Wednesday against Montreal and will now miss at least one game as a result. The team has not yet given a timeline on when he's expected to return. The 20-year-old has nine points in 24 games this season, including four in his last seven appearances.

Impact It will be a battle of friends as Merzlikins will face his former teammate of four seasons, Joonas Korpisalo. Merzlikins is 5-8-3 with a 3.11 GAA and .907 save percentage, a huge improvement over last season when he went 7-18-2 with a 4.23 GAA and .876 save percentage. The Senators are 8-9-0 as they are the only team in the NHL to have played less than 20 games. Ottawa should fire plenty of pucks at Merzlikins, as they are averaging 32.1 shots per game, ninth-best in the NHL.

Cole Sillinger - Suffers lower body injury Sillinger suffered a lower-body injury Wednesday versus Montreal and is considered day-to-day, Jeff Svoboda of the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
Impact Sillinger is questionable for Friday's tilt versus Ottawa. He has a goal and nine points in 24 games. The 20-year-old had a very good rookie season in 2021-22 when he managed 16 goals and 31 points in 75 contests, but he slumped mightily last year, picking up three goals and 11 points in 64 NHL outings.

Kent Johnson - Ascends to top level Johnson was recalled from AHL Cleveland on Thursday.
Impact Johnson seemed lost when he was sent to the minors Nov. 4, as he had only a goal and two assists in eight games. But the trip to the minors did wonders for the fifth overall pick in the 2021 Draft as Johnson had five goals and 15 points in 10 games with the Monsters. The Blue Jackets are in dire need of scoring as they sit 24th in NHL scoring. Look for Johnson to get a top-nine role at this time and expect to see him as a top-six forward in the near future.

Damon Severson - Placed on injured reserve Severson (oblique) was put on injured reserve Thursday.
Impact Severson is expected to miss another five weeks of action after he was injured Nov. 19 versus the Flyers. Severson has three goals, five assists, 21 shots on goal and 35 blocked shots in 19 games this season. A return in early January is likely for the 29-year-old blueliner.

Patrik Laine - Lights lamp in loss Laine scored his fourth goal of the season in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Canadiens.
Impact He opened the scoring early in the second period with a brilliant individual effort, stealing the puck in the Columbus zone and catching Montreal on a line change as he raced down the ice for a near-breakaway on Sam Montembeault. Moments of electricity like that have been few and far between for Laine to begin the season, in part because of an upper-body injury that cost him three weeks of action. In five games since he was made a healthy scratch by coach Pascal Vincent however, he's responded with two goals and three points. Laine's upside as a goal-scorer will keep him in a prominent lineup spot as long as he keeps making an impact, and the 25-year-old could catch fire at any time.

Elvis Merzlikins - Falls to Habs Merzlikins stopped 27 of 30 shots in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Canadiens.
Impact Montreal's final goal was scored into an empty net. Merzlikins was engaged in a spirited goaltending duel with Sam Montembeault all evening, but the Columbus netminder had little chance on the winning tally as Joel Armia tipped home a blast from the point by Mike Matheson with a little under three minutes left in the third period. Merzlikins has seen a heavy workload to begin the season, both in terms of games played and the amount of rubber he's seen -- only Tampa Bay's Jonas Johansson has faced more shots so far than Elvis' 527. He's held up relatively well though, posting a .912 save percentage in November despite a lackluster 3.09 GAA and 3-6-1 record. Daniil Tarasov (knee) still lacks a clear timeline for his return and Spencer Martin is purely a stopgap in the No. 2 role, so Merzlikins should continue logging big minutes for the time being.
