Set for NHL debut Blomqvist will protect the road goal versus the Red Wings on Thursday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports.

Impact Blomqvist will make his NHL debut Thursday as the Penguins play the second half of a back-to-back. Tristan Jarry handled the goaltending duties in a 6-0 loss to the Rangers on Wednesday. Blomqvist is in the backup role to begin 2024-25 while Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) remains sidelined.

Blomqvist has yet to make his NHL debut after being selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, and he has a shot at opening the regular season against the Rangers on Oct. 9 as Tristan Jarry's backup while Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) remains on a week-to-week status.

The 22-year-old netminder was 25-12-6 with a 2.16 GAA and a .921 save percentage in 45 regular-season appearances for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2023-24. Look for Blomqvist to be the first goaltender recalled, if either Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic suffers an injury.

Impact Blomqvist was recalled Thursday when Tristan Jarry (face) was unable to play and Blomqvist was the backup netminder to Magnus Hellberg. Jarry will get the Saturday start versus the Sabres, making Blomqvist redundant on the Penguins roster. Blomqvist was 4-2-0 with a 1.91 GAA and .920 save percentage in seven AHL games before his recall.
