T.J. Oshie - Still not practicing Coach Spencer Carbery told Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post, that Oshie has returned to Minnesota to undergo treatment for an upper-body injury.
Impact Oshie was injured Dec. 17 and it was originally reported as a lower-body injury. Oshie has only two goals and four points in 21 games this season, with a goal and an assist occurring on the power play. There is no timetable for his return.

Darcy Kuemper - Starting Friday Kuemper was the first goaltender off the ice at morning practice and will defend the home crease versus Carolina on Friday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact Kuemper snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday, turning aside 32 shots in a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. The victory gives Kuemper a 9-8-2 record with a 3.15 GAA and an .893 save percentage this season. Kuemper beat Carolina in his only appearance this season, stopping 28 shots in a 2-1 shootout win Dec. 17.

Rasmus Sandin - Doubtful Friday Sandin (illness) was not at practice Friday, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.
Impact Sandin's spot at practice was taken by Ethan Bear, who also replaced him on the second power play. Sandin exploded offensively for the Capitals last season after his trade from Toronto, scoring three times and adding 12 assists in 19 games. He has not had the same offensive luck this season, picking up 11 assists in 36 games.

Alexander Suzdalev - Assigned to junior team The Capitals reassigned Suzdalev from Mora IK of Sweden's Hockey Allsvenskan to the WHL's Saskatoon Blades on Thursday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
Impact Suzdalev only picked up two goals and three points through 13 games during his time in Sweden this year, and the Capitals evidently feel his development will be better served by playing in the WHL. Washington selected the 19-year-old winger in the third round of the 2022 Entry Draft.

John Carlson - Lights lamp Wednesday Carlson tallied a power-play goal, four shots and two hits during Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Devils.
Impact Carlson's second goal of the season ended a five-game scoring drought and gave him his 11th consecutive season with at least 20 points. Despite averaging a career-high 25:42 of ice time, the 33-year-old is struggling mightily to produce the kind of offensive numbers that have made him such a reliable fantasy blueliner over the years. Some positive regression seems likely for the 27th overall pick from the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, so fantasy managers should just hope Carlson turns the corner quickly now that the calendar has rolled into 2024.

Impact He helped set up Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson for tallies in the second period as the Capitals rallied from an early 3-1 deficit, but the team's offense went cold in the third. Ovechkin has two goals and two assists during a modest three-game point streak, but the future Hall of Famer is still well off his accustomed pace with just eight goals and 24 points in 36 contests on the season.

Evgeny Kuznetsov - Two-point effort in loss Kuznetsov picked up a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Devils.
Impact Both points came in the second period as the Capitals rallied from an early 3-1 deficit, but the game was all Devils after that. Kuznetsov snapped a 10-game point drought with the performance, and on the season the 31-year-old has stumbled to a disappointing six goals and 13 points through 32 contests.

Hunter Shepard - Fades late against Devils Shepard made 22 saves in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to New Jersey.
Impact The Capitals came back once to tie the game at 3-3 late in the second period, but Shepard had plenty of traffic in front of him during the final 20-plus minutes and wound up allowing three more goals on just nine shots down the stretch. Since being recalled from AHL Hershey last week, the 28-year-old netminder has gone 0-1-1 in two starts while giving up eight goals on 64 shots, but both outings came on the second half of back-to-back sets. Max Pacioretty - Makes season debut Pacioretty (Achilles) played 11:47 in his season debut versus New Jersey on Wednesday.
Impact It was Pacioretty's first game in almost a year. as he lasted played on Jan. 19, 2023. The 35-year-old failed to hit the scoresheet in a 6-3 loss. He did not see any power play time against the Devils but that should change in the near future as Pacioretty has had 10 seasons with double-digit points with the man-advantage.

Impact Mantha has 11 goals and seven assists through 32 games, putting him on pace for his best season as a member of the Capitals, and within reach of the back-to-back 48-point campaigns that he provided for the Red Wings between 2017-19. Impact Shepard stopped 34 of 36 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to Nashville in his last start Saturday. He's 2-0-1 with a 2.27 GAA and a .926 save percentage in three outings in 2023-24. The Devils are a difficult assignment, ranking seventh offensively this year with 3.46 goals per game.
