Facing Oilers Askarov will patrol the road crease in Edmonton on Saturday, according to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now.

Impact Askarov is considered the Sharks' goaltender of the future. He has started a pair of NHL games this season, going 1-0-1 while allowing four goals on 55 shots. Askarov has excelled at the AHL level this season, as he is 9-4-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .938 save percentage. The Oilers will be a tough matchup for Askarov as they are averaging 3.28 goals per game in 2024-25.

Impact Askarov's promotion comes after Vitek Vanecek was hit by an errant puck during Tuesday's matchup with Winnipeg. Considering Alexandar Georgiev has given up a combined seven goals on 53 shots (.868 save percentage) in his last two outings, the Sharks may have been planning to give Tuesday's start versus Colorado to Vanecek. Instead, it could be an opportunity for Askarov to make his third NHL appearance this season -- or the team will simply go back to Georgiev.

Impact Askarov received plenty of goal support in his first home game as a Shark. He also had an assist on Nico Sturm's opening tally to help his own cause in his first win of the season. The Sharks are currently carrying three goalies and no spare defensemen, so Askarov could end up getting sent to AHL San Jose once Marc-Edouard Vlasic (back) is ready to make his season debut or the team decides to recall Jack Thompson for depth purposes.
