Sami Fouad Guediri - Ends season as backup Guediri was an unused substitute in Sunday's Decision Day defeat against FC Cincinnati.

Impact Guediri made 13 MLS appearances (10 starts) since moving to D.C. in July, splitting time with Andy Najar at left-back. The 25-year-old would face even more competition in the position next season once Brad Smith (knee) returns from injury.

Matai Akinmboni - Starts in season finale Akinmboni made a clearance and an interception in Sunday's 5-2 defeat against FC Cincinnati.

Impact Akinmboni made two starts in MLS for D.C.'s senior team this season, but the 15-year-old is definitely more of a reserve team player at the moment, and should remain so for a few more campaigns still. If he continues developing, he could have a bright future in central defense.

Impact Birnbaum was back as a regular fixture for D.C. in 2022, scoring two goals and keeping five clean sheets in 32 MLS games (all starts) after suffering through a few injury-riddled campaigns before. But the 31-year-old is facing competition from Donovan Pines, Tony Alfaro and Brendan Hines-Ike (foot) in central defense heading into next season.

Jon Kempin - Ends season as backup Kempin was D.C.'s second-choice keeper for much of 2022 but his last MLS appearance came back in April.

Impact Kempin allowed five goals in two MLS starts this season, but he was behind Bill Hamid, Rafael Romo and David Ochoa in the depth chart for much of the year. A series of injuries to those guys meant that Kempin was often called into match day squads as the backup goalkeeper, but the 29-year-old was almost never the preferred option.

Impact Ochoa did not seem comfortable in goal by allowing five goals, including an early hattrick to Brenner. He took over the goalkeeping role late in the season but was not at all impressive with 17 goals conceded in nine appearances. However, he did record a total of 32 saves and 10 clearances, including two clean sheets and a penalty save last match.

Impact Fountas won't return against Cincinnati ending his MLS season there. The striker looked like a revelation during his debut with D.C. United, scoring 12 times and assists once in just 17 starts. The situation with Fountas will likely develop during the off-season as he was accused of using inappropriate language, but no punishment has been levied. There is no timeline for the MLS investigation in the matter to conclude, but if Fountas avoids a suspension he should be a breakout candidate in 2022.

Victor Palsson - Out for season finale Palsson will miss Sunday's clash against FC Cincinnati with a hamstring injury, Steven Goff of The Washington Post reported Friday.

Impact Palsson made 10 MLS appearances (all starts) for D.C. after joining the club from FC Schalke in the summer, and although he is set to miss Decision Day due to injury, the 31-year-old seems likely to be an integral part of Wayne Rooney's side in midfield heading into the 2023 campaign. Sofiane Djeffal is likely to replace him in the XI against Cincinnati.
