Yann Sommer - Returns to training Sommer (thigh) was back in full training with Monchengladbach on Wednesday ahead of Saturday's match against Hoffenheim.

Impact Sommer missed last weekend's DFB-Pokal victory against Overachern with a thigh strain, but he has rejoined the squad and is expected to be available to start in Saturday's Bundesliga opener against Hoffenheim. The goalkeeper has been Gladbach's regular since the 2014/15 season and that's not expected to change this season. On the downside, he secured just four clean sheets in 33 starts last campaign.

Nico Elvedi - Back in cup match Elvedi started during Sunday's DFB Pokal win over Overachern.

Impact Elvedi had taken an ankle injury a week before this game but was back on the pitch and played the full 90 a week before the league season begins. After making 28 starts last season, Elvedi should be a steady part of the lineup for the Foals.

Lars Stindl - Picks up thigh injury Stindl suffered a left thigh injury during Sunday's DFB Pokal match against Overachern, his club announced Monday.

Impact Stindl is now likely to miss the start of the season against Hoffenheim after scoring once and assisting three times in a 9-1 rout during Sunday's game. Patrick Herrmann could take Stindl's place in the lineup until he can return.

Impact Herrmann likely picked up a knock earlier in preseason but looks to be on track for the league-opener Aug. 6 against Hoffenheim if he doesn't play Sunday. After a season in which he recorded four assists and started in just five of his 23 appearances, Herrmann doesn't seem to have a massive role aside from as an impact sub.

Impact Kone is currently in a rehabilitation program that has kept him sidelined for much of his side's preseason, but he is getting closer to fully rejoining the squad. The 21-year-old made 26 midfield starts in his debut Bundesliga campaign last season.

Nico Elvedi - Comes off with ankle injury Elvedi returned for a friendly against Sociedad but came off in the second half with an ankle injury.

Impact Elvedi returned from a minor knee injury he picked up earlier in the off-season to play against Sociedad, but was brought off with a knee injury. The very talented Luca Netz was given some playing time at the end of the friendly and would be a prime option to slot into the starting XI if Elvedi is set to miss any major amount of time.

Kouadio Kone - In rehab Kone will miss Wednesday's friendly against Waalwijk as he's in rehabilitation.

Impact Kone is coming off his first big pro season with two goals in 27 appearances (26 starts) so proving he's no fluke will be important. That'll be a difficult task if he can't get fit when the season begins against Hoffenheim, so it could be a race against the clock to be there Aug. 6.

Impact Elvedi has a couple of weeks to overcome what appears to be a minor injury before the opener against Hoffenheim. He's coming off a decent season with 28 starts and 40 tackles made and he'll hope to keep that role when the coming campaign begins.

Hannes Wolf - Has thigh injury Wolf will miss Wednesday's friendly against Waalwijk due to a thigh injury.

Impact Wolf now has two weeks to get ready in time for the season-opener against Hoffenheim after picking up an injury later into preseason. Last season, he did better during a loan to Swansea, logging two goals and three assists in 19 appearances (18 starts). On the back of those efforts, it will be interesting to see what role he holds when available.

Oscar Fraulo - Transfers to Gladbach Fraulo has signed a four-year contract with Borussia Monchengladbach after transferring from FC Midtjylland, the club announced Friday.

Impact Faulo came up through Midtjylland's academy but he only made four appearances for the senior side in Denmark before making this transfer to the Bundesliga. The 18-year-old is likely to go out on-loan this campaign in order to gain experience, but he could have a future in Gladbach's midfield in a couple seasons.

Ramy Bensebaini - Plays all over defense Bensebaini made starts in central defense as well as left-back and left midfield on the way to 23 appearances (22 starts) in the Bundesliga.

Impact Bensebaini was the ultimate utilityman for Gladbach in 2021/22. The defender did well at left wing-back, left-back, center-back as well as moving to attacking midfield on occasion. That flexibility keeps Bensebaini on the pitch, but makes him an inconsistent fantasy option week to week. Bensebaini will be an important part of the team in 2022/23, but likely not a major fantasy play.

Breel Embolo - Ends on fire Embolo scored four goals in the final five matches of the season on the way to a career-best nine goals and three assists in the Bundesliga.

Impact Embolo finally had a breakout, and he did it all pretty much in the final two months of the campaign. The forward looked set for yet another forgettable season before scoring five goals and providing an assist in the final two months of the campaign. Embolo made 29 appearances (24 starts) and should be set to lead the line once more in 2022/23.

Marvin Friedrich - Starts final two matches Friedrich moved from Union Berlin to Gladbach during the January transfer window and started the final two matches of the campaign.

Impact Friedrich was dealing with various health issues following his transfer, but when fully fit he did get on the pitch. The central defender isn't a major fantasy play, but with Matthias Ginter on the way to Freiburg there should be more chances for Friedrich in the starting XI. Friedrich has shown the ability to play a full 34 matches, doing so in 2020/21 with Union Berlin, where he scored five goals despite his defensive role.

Kouadio Kone - Breakout campaign Kone made 27 appearances (26 starts), scoring twice and making 68 tackles during the 2021/22 campaign.

Impact Kone joined Gladbach and became an immediate stalwart in the center of the pitch. The midfielder may not be a massive fantasy play due to his role in the team, but his excellence and stability in the starting XI give Kone a safe fantasy floor. Kone will be right back in the starting XI throughout the 2022/23 campaign barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Marcus Thuram - Returns in finale Thuram returned from a hamstring injury in the final match of the campaign against Hoffenheim.

Impact Thuram had a disappointing and injury-riddled campaign, making 21 appearances (nine starts), by far the fewest he's made in a season so far in his senior career. The forward was dealing with injuries, and simply found himself out of the starting XI when fit. Thuram is still only 24 and certainly has the potential to bounce back in 2022/23, but he needs to find some early form to compete with the wealth of attacking options Gladbach can bring to bear.

Luca Netz - Starts final four matches Netz started the final four matches of the season on the way to 24 appearances and 17 starts in the Bundesliga.

Impact Netz would be one of the brightest young full-back prospects in Germany if not for the competition in his own team. The 19-year old showed flashes of brilliance throughout the season on the way to four assists, and took over the starting role at the end of the season. The only issue for Netz and fantasy managers is Joe Scally, another very talented 19-year old left-back. With both competing for only one spot in the starting XI it's impossible to pick one for Gladbach, as both have plenty of potential for the 2022/23 campaign.

Jonas Hofmann - Career year Hofmann scored 12 times and added five assists during 26 appearances in the Bundesliga.

Impact Hofmann produced the best year of his career by far in 2021/22, going over 2,000 minutes for the first time his career, and producing double-digit goals. The winger was brilliant throughout the campaign, getting forward far more often than in previous years, shooting 54 times, while also creating a career-best 70 chances. Hofmann will be a crucial part of the Gladbach attack heading into the 2022/23 campaign where he will be a top fantasy option once more.

Louis Beyer - Starts seven of last eight Beyer started seven of the last eight matches in the Bundesliga on the way to 17 appearances.

Impact Beyer started the season near the bottom of the depth chart but worked his way up throughout the season, eventually starting seven of the final eight matches. Beyer would have likely played in the final match as well, though a knock kept him out of contention for the finale against Hoffenheim. Beyer's role could be set to grow as Matthias Ginter moves to Freiburg, leaving an opening alongside Nico Elvedi in central defense.

Lars Stindl - Held back by knee Stindl scored four goals and added five assists in 26 appearances (20 starts) in the 2021/22 Bundesliga season.

Impact Stindl scored four goals on 43 shots during the campaign, as he actually seemed set to make the most starts he's produced since 2017 in the campaign. Unfortunately a knee injury in the middle of the season derailed Stindl's campaign and held him to only 20 starts. Stindl isn't getting any younger but his talent is undeniable and it's entirely possible he plays a major role for Gladbach once more in 2022/23.

Patrick Herrmann - Makes five starts Herrmann made 23 appearances (five starts), providing four assists during the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign.

Impact Herrmann truly fell out of the starting XI in 2021/22. In previous seasons he had at least flirted with double-digit starts, making nine in 2020/21, and 16 in 2019/20. Competition and age have caught up with the pacey winger, who isn't much of a starting option, playing only 744 minutes across the season. Hermann will be an unreliable fantasy play barring injuries to the team in front of him in 2022/23.

Nico Elvedi - Consistent starter Elvedi made 28 starts, scoring once and adding 40 tackles during the 2021/22 Bundesliga season.

Impact Elvedi consistently found himself in the starting XI during the 2021/22 campaign. The central defender has been a key part of the Gladbach team since he was 17-years old, and is showing no signs of falling out of contention for the starting XI. With Matthias Ginter headed to Freiburg, Elvedi will be relied on to lead the Gladbach defense in 2022/23.

Joe Scally - Breakout campaign Scally made 30 appearances (20 starts) scoring once and provided two assists during the 2021/22 Bundesliga season.

Impact Scally truly broke out with Gladbach in 2021/22, the left-back was a fixture in the starting XI for the first half of the season before being replaced by Luca Netz in the closing stages of the campaign. It's likely that Scally will continue to compete with Netz heading into the 2022/23 campaign, but the young American has the potential to win the starting job outright moving forward. Scally was good for 35 crosses and 18 chances created on the way to his three goal contributions.
