Tulane defense comes up big in 24-10 win over Rice; Green Wave remain unbeaten in AAC

Makhi Hughes ran for 140 yards and a touchdown, and Tulane forced four turnovers and beat Rice 24-10 to remain undefeated in the American Athletic Conference

Alex Bauman - Won't play vs Rice Bauman (undisclosed) won't play against Rice, per Isaac Popper of the Fear The Wave Collective.

Impact Bauman reportedly avoided a serious injury and was close to being able to play this week, but the tight end will ride the sideline for the first time this season. In his stead, Reggie Brown will lead the way for Tulane at tight end.

Shazz Preston - Set to debut Saturday Preston will be available Saturday versus Rice, Garland Gillen of WVUE-TV reports.

Impact Preston is set to make his much anticipated Tulane debut Saturday. He has missed the first six games of the season due to a nagging hamstring injury after transferring in from Alabama during the offseason. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the Green Wave's offense that has been rolling with Darian Mensah under center.

Yulkeith Brown - Scores twice in Saturday's blowout Brown hauled in 4 of 5 targets for 60 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 71-20 victory against UAB.

Impact Brown caught a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter Saturday, his first two touchdowns since Week 1. He led the team in receptions, targets and yards and accounted for a third of the team's total passing yards. He has now gained over 55 yards in two straight games after not logging over 31 in each of his first four appearances.

Mario Williams - Quiet in blowout win Williams had one reception (on three targets) for eight yards during Saturday's 71-20 victory versus UAB.

Impact The Green Wave ran the ball 50 times Saturday compared to just 18 passing attempts, so it's not a major surprise that Williams had his worst game of the season. He set season lows in receptions, targets and yards and was simply not needed in the 51-point victory. With some struggling opponents coming up on the schedule, Williams will likely need to get involved early to salvage a good performance.

Jamauri McClure - Breaks out in Saturday's win McClure posted 10 carries for 84 yards and one touchdown and gathered in their only target for 24 yards during Saturday's 71-20 victory against UAB.

Impact McClure recorded over 100 yards from scrimmage Saturday and most notably scored his first career collegiate touchdown. The true freshman has appeared in two games this season and has looked good when given the opportunity to play, however it would not be surprising if he ended up playing a maximum of four games so he can redshirt and save a year of eligibility.

Makhi Hughes - Dominant once again Hughes totaled 15 rushes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and gathered in their only target for 15 yards during Saturday's 71-20 victory versus UAB.

Impact To no one's surprise, Hughes put together an excellent performance in Saturday's blowout win, despite being taken out early in the third quarter. He logged his third 100-yard performance of the season and scored a pair of touchdowns, bringing him up to eight total (one receiving) on the season. Given how well the Green Wave are playing right now, in addition to how well Hughes produced in conference play last season, Hughes is likely in for a big second half of the season.

Arnold Barnes III - Scores twice in win Barnes totaled 11 rushes for 82 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 71-20 win versus UAB.

Impact Barnes scored a pair of touchdowns Saturday, his first two scores since Week 1. He set season highs in rushing attempts and yards as he got a lot of work in the second half due to the Green Wave's commanding lead. Barnes appears to be the team's No. 2 back behind Mekhi Hughes, so if anything were to happen to Hughes Barnes would be in for a big workload.

Ty Thompson - Two touchdowns Saturday Thompson completed 2 of 3 passes for 46 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 71-20 win versus UAB. He also had three rushes for 10 yards with one touchdown.

Impact Thompson opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a three-yard touchdown run in the Green Wave's goal line package, his fourth rushing touchdown of the season. He also threw his second touchdown of the season in the third quarter after he replaced Darian Mensah due to the massive lead. Although Thompson is getting fairly consistent work on the ground, he does not play enough to warrant serious consideration.

Darian Mensah - Quiet in blowout win Mensah was 12-for-15 passing for 134 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 71-20 win against UAB.

Impact Mensah had an efficient passing day Saturday, however his services weren't needed much as the game got out of hand quickly. Despite his team scoring 37 points in the first half, Mensah was not involved in any of the scoring. He opened up the second half with a touchdown pass to Yulkeith Brown and was taken out of the game shortly after. Although he is clearly talented and can put up big numbers when it's needed of him, he may not get always enough opportunities if the Green Wave continues blowing out conference foes by running the ball.

Jacob Barnes - Makes three extra points Barnes (undisclosed) made all three of his extra-point attempts during Saturday's win over UAB.

Impact Barnes managed to make his return to the field after having missed the past two weeks due to an undisclosed injury. So far this season, Barnes has converted on three of his four field-goal attempts and made all 13 of his extra-point tries.

Shazz Preston - DNP in Week 6 Preston (hamstring) was inactive during Saturday's 71-20 win over UAB.

Impact Preston has yet to appear this season as he continues to deal with a hamstring issue. The 6-foot sophomore, a former top-150 prospect in the class of 2022, will have his next opportunity to return to action in Week 8 against Rice.

Impact Bauman was carted off the field in Saturday's game against UAB, but recent reports suggest that the injury might not have been as severe as initially expected. Head coach Jon Sumrall revealed the "X-rays showed no fracture. It could potentially be a low ankle sprain, not a high, and maybe an MCL. ... It might be a week. It might be two." His next chance to play will come against Rice on Oct. 19, right after the bye week.

Alex Bauman - Carted off vs. UAB Bauman was carted off the field in Tulane's tilt with UAB, Guerry Smith of The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Impact Bauman had two catches for seven yards before he was carted off the field, reportedly staying down on the turf for a long time. The severity of Bauman's injury is currently unclear, but the tight end will likely be replaced by Reggie Brown.

Impact Clayton-Johnson's previous concussion is now a clear item of the past if he could have no problem logging a season high in carries Saturday. He will finish September with 10 carries for 41 yards.
