Geraldo Perdomo - Bats leadoff Saturday Perdomo batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 6-3 win over Cleveland.
Impact Pavin Smith had recently been the preferred leadoff hitter against right-handers, but manager Torey Lovullo vaulted Perdomo into the role from the lower third of the order. It was the fourth time the young shortstop hit atop the order and the first time he failed to reach base. Perdomo is 7-for-16 with two walks as the Diamondbacks' leadoff hitter. It's uncertain if Lovullo will continue to use Perdomo at leadoff, but his numbers in a short sampling have been better than Smith's.

Impact A day after he was given a vote of confidence as a leadoff hitter from manager Torey Lovullo, Smith was dropped to the six hole Saturday. Since May 27, he'd been the primary leadoff batter against right-handers but was dropped against Cleveland righty Shane Bieber. Smith's numbers atop the order (.148/.258/.333) don't support his continued use in that role, but Lovullo sounded optimistic when speaking with Eli McKown of the Arizona Republic on Friday. Impact McCarthy extended his hitting streak to six games (10-for-24), and his go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning was his fifth extra-base hit during the streak. The outfielder hadn't homered since April 23, just two games before his demotion to Triple-A Reno. He's at two long balls, eight RBI, 18 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and a .233/.296/.357 slash line over 42 contests this year. He's seeing regular playing time thanks to his improved hitting of late, which has pushed Pavin Smith into more of a part-time role.

Impact Kyle Nelson started the ninth inning in a non-save situation but put two runners on base. McGough allowed one of those runners to score but had no additional trouble finishing off the contest. With two saves in his last four appearances, McGough appears to be continuing his ascent up Arizona's leverage ladder. He's been charged with just one unearned run over his last 15 innings while posting a 20:4 K:BB in that span. For the season, the 33-year-old has a 2.68 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 42:12 K:BB, two saves and 12 holds through 37 innings. Miguel Castro, who picked up the win Saturday, and Andrew Chafin remain the most likely candidates for saves.
