Impact Smith entered the game on an 0-for-10 run, which expanded to 0-for-12 before his sixth-inning single plated a run. He batted leadoff once again, which he's regularly done since May 27, and received a vote of confidence in that role from manager Torey Lovullo prior to Friday's game, Eli McKown of Arizona Republic reports. "I don't want to run from the success that he's had," Lovullo said pregame. "I know that he's very capable of getting a great run." Despite the manager's confidence, Smith is batting just .148/.248/.221 from the leadoff spot.

Zac Gallen - Velocity returns Gallen, whose fastball velocity dipped to 92 mph in a start last Sunday, averaged 93.6 mph during Friday's win over Cleveland, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact That Gallen allowed five runs and 10 hits against the Tigers fueled speculation about the diminished velocity. The right-hander dismissed the chatter. "I think somebody said it raised alarms," Gallen said. "Just silly articles, I guess. I think we can put that to bed." Friday's velocity was a tick above his season average, as both the pitcher and manager Torey Lovullo attributed the one-game drop to the game played at an unusually early hour.

Alek Thomas - Work on swing paying off Thomas adjusted his swing in the minors and is batting .349/.413/.500 over 25 games at Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Thomas, who opened the season in the Diamondbacks' outfield, was demoted to Triple-A on May 17. His struggles against left-handers -- 1-for-36 with a single -- was the main reason Thomas was sent down. He immediately got to work on his swing mechanics with Drew Hedman, the organization's director of minor league hitting coach. They started by ditching a leg kick, but Hedman and Thomas eventually settled on improving the timing of his weight transfer, which seems to have worked against pitchers of either hand. Thomas is slashing .314/.324/.429 against southpaws.

Zac Gallen - Bounces back Friday Gallen (8-2) allowed a run on six hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Guardians.
Impact Gallen hadn't completed seven innings in any of his last five starts while surrendering 18 runs (14 earned) over 27 innings in that span. Friday's effort was much more in line with his expected standard, as he was able to limit the damage to a solo home run from Jose Ramirez. Gallen is now at a 2.96 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 100:19 K:BB through 91.1 innings through 15 starts on the year. He's projected for a more challenging road start in Milwaukee next week.
