Tommy Henry - Will join Arizona rotation Henry will take Madison Bumgarner's place in the Diamondbacks' starting rotation, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Bumgarner was designated for assignment Thursday morning and Henry is going to get the first shot at that vacant rotation spot, which comes around again Monday versus the Royals. Brandon Pfaadt should soon be a consideration too, especially if Henry's early struggles at Triple-A Reno carry over onto the MLB scene. The 25-year-old holds an ugly 6.33 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 22:8 K:BB in 21.1 innings (four starts) this year with Reno and had a 5.36 ERA in nine big-league starts last season. He's not a reccomended fantasy streamer.

Brandon Pfaadt - Pitching at Triple-A on Thursday Pfaadt is scheduled to start Thursday for Triple-A Reno, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports.
Impact It's notable that Pfaadt is basically on the same pitching schedule as Madison Bumgarner, who was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Thursday morning. Pfaadt could eventually slide into Arizona's starting rotation as a direct replacement for MadBum, though Tommy Henry will reportedly get the first such turn. Pfaadt, 24, has posted a 3.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 395:64 K:BB in 312 career minor-league innings and entered the 2023 campaign as a consensus top-100 prospect. He's tallied 17 strikeouts through 13.1 frames this year with Reno.

Impact It's a rather shocking move, as Bumgarner is still owed around $36 million from the five-year, $85 million contract that he signed with Arizona back in December 2019. The 33--year-old left-hander had been lit up for 20 runs -- 19 earned -- through 16.2 innings (four starts) this season and heads into DFA limbo with an overall 5.23 ERA in 363.1 total frames (69 starts) as a member of the Diamondbacks. He'll assuredly pass through waivers unclaimed because of the remaining money on his contract before then heading into free agency in search of a new team.

Jake McCarthy - Extends hitless run McCarthy went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Wednesday's 14-5 loss to St. Louis.
Impact McCarthy is hitless over his last 15 at-bats and is batting just .154 through 17 games. Wednesday's non-start was the second straight game against a right-hander that the lefty-hitting outfielder opened on the bench. Pavin Smith, who homered for a second straight game in place of McCarthy in the starting lineup, could grab more opportunities going foward.

Alek Thomas - Goes deep in loss Thomas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 14-5 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact Thomas helped erase an early 3-0 deficit with a second-inning homer, his first of the season. The young outfielder has hit safely in just five of 15 starts and is batting .176 through 17 appearances overall. The Diamondbacks appeared this spring to be committed to Thomas, who played 113 games in the majors last season, but his role could diminish given the promising start of Pavin Smith, another lefty batter, who is hitting .381 start since being called up from Triple-A Reno. It helps Thomas that Jake McCarthy (.154) is also underwhelming, and the latter could be first in line to lose a prominent role in the outfield.

Impact Smith has hit safely in three straight games, including homers in the last two, and is up to .381 (8-for-21) with five extra-base hits since a callup from Triple-A Reno. He was added after Kyle Lewis (illness) landed on the injured list, and he has not yet begun a planned rehab assignment. Additionally, it may be worth keeping Smith on the roster, given the production from primary outfielders Jake McCarthy (.453 OPS) and Alex Thomas (.564).

Going back to July of 2022, he has a 7.86 ERA over 14 outings. Once again, the fastball failed to reach 90 mph. If the Diamondbacks do decide to go another way, the most likely candidates to fill in are Triple-A Reno starters Tommy Henry or Brendan Pfaadt.
