Fernando Cruz - Pitches in return to roster
Cruz allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 9-4 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact
It was wild outing for Cruz, who made his first appearances after being reinstated from the COVID-19-related list Friday. He hit the first batter faced, walked the next, then threw a couple of wild pitches.

Noelvi Marte - Laces hit, steals home
Marte went 1-for-4 with a run scored and one steal in Friday's 9-4 loss to St. Louis.
Impact
Marte managed to steal home in the fourth inning after Willson Contreras tried to throw out Spencer Steer in a stolen base attempt at second. He is the second Reds player to steal home this year after Elly De La Cruz achieved the feat July 8 against Milwaukee. Marte now has six steals and is slashing .254/.329/381 over his first 63 at-bats in 19 games.

Nick Senzel - Cracks homer in rare start
Senzel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-4 loss against St. Louis.
Impact
Senzel hit a 408-foot blast off Drew Rom in the third inning for his 11th home run on the year. The five-year veteran saw his first start since Sept. 1 on Friday night as he has struggled to find playing time since Harrison Bader and Hunter Renfroe joined the Reds via waivers. Not that Senzel has deserved much more playing time, as he is now slashing .223/.291/.383 over 264 at-bats in 89 games.

Andrew Abbott - Yields six runs in loss
Abbott (8-5) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against St. Louis. He struck out three.
Impact
After a stellar 1.90 ERA and 66:19 K:BB in 61.2 innings over his first 10 starts, Abbott has struggled mightily of late. The 24-year-old rookie sports a 6.51 ERA with 41:20 K:BB in 37.1 innings over his last eight starts. Abbott looks to right the ship in his next outing, scheduled to be at Detroit.

Hunter Renfroe - Hits first homer with Reds
Renfroe went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss against the Cardinals.
Impact
Renfroe tallied his first Reds home run with a 378-ft shot off Drew Rom in the 3rd inning. Starts have been sporadic for the 31-year-old in the crowded Cincinnati outfield since being acquired from the Angels. Since joining the Reds on Sept. 1, Renfroe has started just four out of eight possible games.

Joey Votto - Could return Sunday
Cincinnati manager David Bell said Votto (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list as early as Sunday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Votto is set to begin a minor-league stint Friday with Triple-A Louisville, and the Reds apparently don't think he'll need much time to get back up to speed. The 39-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 24 because of a mild strain in his troublesome left shoulder. He's appeared in only 51 major-league games this season.

Will Benson - On bench Friday
Benson is absent from the lineup Friday versus the Cardinals.
Impact
Benson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and a stolen base in Wednesday's series finale against the Mariners, but the Reds will go righty-heavy Friday as they match up against Cardinals lefty Drew Rom. Benson has batted .156/.229/.219 in 35 plate appearances this year versus southpaws.

Jake Fraley - Sitting versus lefty
Fraley is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Impact
Nick Senzel, Harrison Bader and Stuart Fairchild are starting across the outfield for the Reds as they take on left-hander Drew Rom. Hunter Renfroe (hamstring) is back in action in the DH role. Fraley, a left-handed hitter, has slashed just .147/.250/.235 in 40 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.

T.J. Friedl - Sitting against lefty
Friedl is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Impact
Harrison Bader will cover center field and bat leadoff with the Cardinals throwing left-hander Drew Rom. Bader should continue to start in center against all southpaws, though Friedl can sometimes appear in those lineups as the left fielder.

Tyler Stephenson - Takes seat Friday
Stephenson is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Impact
Luke Maile will catch and bat ninth versus the Cardinals and lefty Drew Rom. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Stephenson, who has gone 7-for-12 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI over his last four games.

ROTOWIRE
Hunter Renfroe - Returns to lineup Friday
Renfroe (hamstring) is back in the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Impact
Renfroe will serve as the Reds' designated hitter and bat third versus the Cardinals and left-hander Drew Rom after some left hamstring tightness limited him to pinch-hitting duties in Cincinnati's previous series against the Mariners. The 31-year-old has gone 2-for-13 with two singles in five games since being claimed off waivers from the Angels on Aug. 31.

Kevin Herget - Designated for assignment
Herget was designated for assignment by the Reds on Friday.
Impact
Herget holds a 5.18 ERA and 13:6 K:BB over 24.1 innings during his time in the majors this season. It's the second time this season that the reliever was removed from the Reds' 40-man roster, and he seems likely to clear waivers again and head to Triple-A Louisville.

Fernando Cruz - Back from COVID-19 IL
Cruz was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday.
Impact
Cruz was one of a handful of Reds players to miss time with COVID-19, but he returns having been out for the minimum seven days. He's been an important reliever for Cincinnati this season, posting a 4.12 ERA and 79:24 K:BB over 54.2 frames.

Joey Votto - Beginning rehab assignment
Votto (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact
Votto began easing back into hitting drills about a week ago and evidently things must have gone well. The Reds have not set a target date for Votto's return to the lineup, as they no doubt want to see how his shoulder responds in game action first. Votto has been on the shelf for the last two weeks with a left shoulder strain, which is the same shoulder he had surgically repaired last year.

Jonathan India - On track to return Tuesday
India (foot) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact
India has been sidelined since late July with left foot plantar fasciitis but has been progressing well of late and is ready to test things out in a game setting. Barring a setback, he is expected to be activated Tuesday ahead of the Reds' series in Detroit. Cincinnati will have some lineup juggling to do once India returns, but the 26-year-old undoubtedly will be starting most days,

ROTOWIRE
Carson Spiers - Nabs another start
The Reds list Spiers as their probable starting pitcher for Saturday's home game against the Cardinals.
Impact
Though Hunter Greene (illness) is scheduled to return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Sunday's series finale, the Reds will still have an opening in the rotation for Spiers this weekend with Ben Lively (illness) and Brandon Williamson (illness) still stuck on the COVID-19 IL and with Graham Ashcraft (toe) recently landing on the 15-day IL. Due to the Reds' depleted rotation depth, Spiers made the jump from Double-A Chattanooga to the majors last weekend and took a no-decision in a 15-7 loss to the Cubs, striking out seven while allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. The 25-year-old right-hander doesn't make for an inspiring streaming option against St. Louis and could be sent back to the minors immediately after Saturday's start.
