Impact After being called up from Triple-A Toledo coming out of the All-Star break, the lefty-hitting Maton had started in five of the Tigers' first six matchups with right-handed starting pitchers. He's gone just 2-for-14 at the dish since rejoining the big club, however, and Maton may no longer be guaranteed a strong-side platoon role in the infield. He'll take a seat against Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove on Sunday while Andy Ibanez gets the nod at the keystone.

Alex Faedo - Called up ahead of start The Tigers recalled Faedo from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Padres at Comerica Park.
Impact Detroit optioned reliever Brendan White to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Faedo, who has had issues with run prevention (6.98 ERA) in six starts in the majors this season despite solid underlying ratios (3.93 SIERA, 19.7 K-BB%). He'll be stepping into the Detroit rotation as a temporary sixth starter while the Tigers look to give Tarik Skubal an additional day of rest before his next scheduled outing Monday versus San Francisco. If Faedo fares well in his return to the big leagues, however, it's possible that he sticks around in the rotation as a potential replacement for rookie Reese Olson, who was blasted for five earned runs in five innings Friday versus the Padres.

Impact After a rain delay knocked out starter Matt Manning, Englert was handed the ball to start the third inning and immediately got into trouble. He served up an RBI double to Juan Soto and then a three-run homer to Manny Machado in back-to-back at-bats for the first of Englert's nine runs given up. The outing spoiled what has otherwise been a solid rookie season for Englert, ballooning his ERA from 4.19 to 5.46 and giving him his third loss of the campaign.

Impact After tossing two scoreless innings, Manning was forced back to the sidelines due to a rain delay and did not return despite only throwing 32 pitches. The start marked his first outing going fewer than five innings but continued a stretch of strong play. Over his last three starts (14.1 innings) Manning has allowed just one earned run and five total hits to lower his season ERA to 3.19. Impact Faedo has struggled to a 6.98 ERA in six big-league starts this season, though his ERA estimators - in particular his 3.92 SIERA - tell a different story.
