Dealt first defeat Clevinger (2-1) was charged with the loss Tuesday versus the Mariners after surrendering four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks across six innings.

Impact Clevinger allowed only a solo homer to Sam Haggerty through the first three frames, but Seattle struck for three runs on three hits and a walk during the fourth inning. It was the first time through eight outings this year the right-hander gave up more than three runs in an appearance, though he was still able to keep the Friars within striking distance. Clevinger has a 3.34 ERA and 1.14 WHIP for the year and tentatively lines up to take the mound early next week in Colorado.

Impact Making his first start since June 5, Clevinger tossed 50 of 81 pitches for strikes before exiting, and his only real mistake resulted in a solo shot by Alek Thomas. The veteran right-hander has a 3.52 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB through 23 innings over six appearances (five starts) this season, and while the Padres will continue to treat him with kid gloves in his return from Tommy John surgery in 2020, he should be able to pitch long enough to quality for a win in his next outing.

Impact Clevinger worked in relief in his first outing back from the COVID-19 injured list, giving up two runs on five hits across two innings of work against the Rockies on Friday. The plan was seemingly always to have him return to the rotation as soon as possible, however, so he'll start Wednesday in the spot that had belonged to Joe Musgrove, who's on the COVID-19 injured list himself.

Impact Clevinger was activated from the COVID-19 injured list earlier in the day, and he came into the contest in the fifth inning after starter MacKenzie Gore was roughed up for eight runs in four-plus frames. Clevinger had his own struggles, yielding four straight hits that resulted in two runs to begin the sixth inning. This was the right-hander's first appearance on a big-league mound since June 15 and just his second outing over the past month. With Joe Musgrove landing on the COVID-19 IL on Friday, Clevinger will presumably be in line for a start against either Arizona or Philadelphia next week.

Returns from injured list Clevinger was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday.

Impact Clevinger has had a very disrupted season in his first year back from Tommy John surgery. A knee injury prevented him from making his season debut until early May, and he returned to the injured list with a strained triceps after making just three starts. He made it back from that injury for just a single start before hitting the COVID-19 injured list last weekend. He's back again after a relatively brief absence and will try to finally find some consistency on the mound. It's unclear when he'll next take the hill, as Nick Martinez and Blake Snell are pencilled in for the two weekend starts at Coors Field.
