Impact Clevinger was eased back into action, throwing 60 pitches (36 strikes) in his first start since May 17. He allowed a leadoff homer to Kolten Wong in the first inning and nothing more before Nick Martinez delivered four frames of relief pitching. Clevinger has managed a 3.18 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB in 17 innings across four starts this year after missing all of 2021 to Tommy John recovery. The right-hander should see a slightly lighter workload with the Padres likely to roll a six-man rotation after the breakout of MacKenzie Gore. Impact Clevinger looks to be on track to return from the shelf in the near-minimum amount of time after he was placed on the IL on May 22 with a strained right triceps. The right-hander will rejoin the big-league rotation without requiring a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand, but the Padres could ease him back into the mix Sunday with a lighter workload than usual. Assuming the Padres keep a six-man rotation in place when Clevinger returns, Nick Martinez is likely to move back to the bullpen.

Impact When Clevinger was placed on the injured list May 22, there was some concern that the right-hander could be out longer than the minimum 15 days since the triceps issue affected the same arm on which he underwent Tommy John surgery last season.
