Goes on IL with triceps strain The Padres placed Clevinger on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right triceps strain.
Impact The severity of the strain isn't known, but it's not an encouraging diagnosis for a pitcher that underwent Tommy John surgery on the same arm in November 2020. With that in mind, Clevinger could end up spending more than the minimum 15 days on the shelf, as the Padres are likely to ease him back slowly even if the triceps strain proves to be a minor concern. After opening the past week in a bullpen role, MacKenzie Gore will start Sunday's game against the Giants and could effectively replace Clevinger if the Padres opt to maintain a five-man rotation. If the Padres elect to go with a six-man setup, Nick Martinez could also recapture a starting role while Clevinger is out.

Electric over five innings Clevinger (1-0) got the win Tuesday after pitching five scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out five batters against the Phillies.
Impact Clevinger limited the damage against him to just one hit, a single by Alec Bohm in the fourth frame while snagging his first win of the year. The five innings were his longest since making his season debut May 5 following a knee injury. It was the 31-year-old's first start this season where he didn't walk a batter and through three starts he has posted a 3.21 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 14 frames. Clevinger tentatively projects to take the mound again Sunday in San Francisco.

Whiffs six in no-decision Clevinger didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Cubs, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Impact Clevinger put multiple runners on base in every inning except the fourth, with the big bow coming on an Alfonso Rivas two-run shot in the third. That's now two starts surrendering three runs and going fewer than five innings to open 2022, as the 31-year-old's stats on the season are five runs allowed on 10 hits and five walks with 10 strikeouts in nine innings. The one positive has been pitch count as Clevinger has exceeded 90 pitches in both outings and appears to be fully recovered from his knee injury. With San Diego employing a six-man rotation, Clevinger isn't scheduled to pitch again until next week against Philadelphia.

Impact Facing off against of his former organizations, the right-hander was making his first appearance for the Padres since the 2020 playoffs after he was sidelined for the entire 2021 campaign following Tommy John surgery and the first month of the 2022 season due to a sprained knee. Clevinger didn't face any major restrictions in his first start with the big club, as he was lifted after tossing 95 pitches. The 31-year-old's excellent body of work in the majors makes him an interesting speculative pickup in shallower leagues where he might still be available, but he could need a few starts to sharpen his command and control coming off a lengthy layoff from game action. He threw only 54 of his 95 pitches for strikes Wednesday.
