Impact Cortes deserved the win, but Clay Holmes blew a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning with the top of Minnesota's lineup due up. This was Cortes' best and longest start of the season, but the first of three where he didn't get the win. He threw 93 pitches and appears to be in midseason form. Impact Cortes impressed again, earning his second consecutive win to start the season. The left-hander was efficient, throwing 60 of 91 pitches for strikes, and wouldn't take any damage until he exited the game in the sixth inning. Cortes left two runners on before being relieved, and the Orioles would earn their first runs of the game following an Anthony Statander two-run double. The 28-year-old owns a 2.61 ERA and 8:2 K:BB through 10.1 innings and will look to stay in the win column in his next start, likely in the upcoming series with the Twins next week.

Impact Cortes gave up multiple hits in three of his five frames, but the Phillies managed just one run off him. With the Yankees up 8-1 after five innings and with Cortes having thrown just 11.1 frames this spring, manager Aaron Boone elected to go to the bullpen, which preserved the big lead to hand the southpaw the win in his season debut. Superb in second spring start Cortes tossed four scoreless innings against St. Louis in a Grapefruit League game Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out seven batters.
Impact This was a far better outing for Cortes than his spring debut March 18, when he allowed five runs in 3.2 frames. The left-handed hurler worked his way up to 66 pitches (47 of which were strikes) in the outing Thursday after throwing 52 his previous time out. Cortes didn't participate in early Grapefruit League action due to a hamstring injury, but he appears to be back to full health and set to be in the rotation to begin the campaign. Though Cortes is by hierarchy the Yankees' No .3 starter, he'll likely start New York's fifth game of the season in order to have a few extra days to ramp up.
