Nearing rehab assignment Cortes (shoulder) will throw to live hitters again Monday and is expected to kick off a minor-league rehab assignment soon thereafter, per MLB.com.

Impact Cortes tossed a 20-pitch simulated game last Sunday, and he proclaimed himself to be "totally pain free" afterward. The southpaw then threw a live batting-practice session Thursday and again emerged without any issues, so he appears to be just about past the shoulder strain that has kept him out of game action since May 30. If all goes well for the remainder of Cortes' rehab, he'll likely rejoin the Yankees' rotation during the first week of August.

Impact It was the left-hander's first time facing live batters since he landed on the shelf with a shoulder strain in early June, and he should continue building up his workload Thursday. Cortes won't be eligible to be activated until early August since he was recently transferred to the 60-day IL, but he wasn't a likely bet to return much before that regardless since he'll require a multi-outing rehab assignment in the minors.

Transferred to 60-day IL Cortes (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Impact The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of Carlos Rodon. Cortes is slated to face hitters this weekend and wouldn't seem to be too far off from a rehab assignment, but he now won't be eligible for activation until August 3. He has not suffered a setback, but rather he and the Yankees are just wanting to take things slowly.
