Impact The outfielder spent time in the Guardians, Mets and Nationals' organizations in 2022. Posting a sub-.600 OPS with each team's Triple-A club, Johnson showed little to suggest he belongs on an MLB roster this season, no less the talented Padres'. Jared Koenig - Inks MiLB deal with San Diego Koenig signed a minor-league contract Tuesday with the Padres.
Impact Koenig was non-tendered by the Athletics back in November after posting an ugly 5.72 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 22:15 K:BB over his first 39.1 major-league innings last season. The 29-year-old southpaw will function as organizational pitching depth for San Diego in 2023.

Cole Hamels - Not slated for Cactus League games Hamels (shoulder) is not expected to appear in any Cactus League games this spring, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Impact Hamels did throw a successful bullpen session Thursday in Padres camp, but the plan calls for him to take it easy over the next month or so as he continues his recovery from September 2021 shoulder surgery. The veteran left-hander is slated to begin pitching in games at extended spring training soon after camp breaks. He inked a minor-league contract with San Diego on Feb. 16.

Fernando Tatis Jr. - Won't play in first spring game Tatis (suspension) won't play in the first Cactus League game of the season, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact "[Tatis is] not going to play in the first game," Padres manager Bob Melvin said. "It'll be within the first week, but we want to make sure he does everything that he's gonna have to acclimate to in games." Tatis had multiple surgeries in the offseason -- one to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and another on his left wrist -- and also won't be able to play due to a PED suspension until April 20.
