Camilo Doval - Likely to remain primary closer Giants president Farhan Zaidi said Jan. 12 that Doval will enter the 2023 season as the team's primary closer, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Impact Doval overtook Jake McGee early last season as the Giants' preferred end-game option and ultimately finished the campaign earning 27 of the team's 39 saves while pitching to a 2.53 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 80:30 K:BB in 67.2 innings. San Francisco made a few cosmetic changes to its bullpen over the offseason, but the most notable of the new pickups -- Taylor Rogers -- lost hold of the closing role in San Diego in 2022 after a string of blown saves and will likely have to settle for setup duties to begin his tenure with the Giants. Though Gabe Kapler displayed some tendencies to take a committee approach to the closer's role earlier in his managerial career, Doval's performance in 2022 in addition to the lack of high-quality alternatives is probably enough to make the 25-year-old one of the more stable sources for saves heading into fantasy drafts.

Impact Conforto played long toss from 200 feet, and Webeck notes that his throws were encouragingly clocked in the high 80s. The 29-year-old will be limited to DH duties in the early part of the Cactus League schedule, but it sounds like he'll be fit to serve as the Giants' primary left fielder come Opening Day. Conforto missed the entire 2022 season following right shoulder surgery before inking a one-year, $18 million contract with San Francisco in December.

Impact Ankle surgery ultimately cut DeSclafani's 2022 campaign short after five starts and 19 innings, during which he posted a 6.63 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. The right-hander underwent surgery in July, and while his status is worth monitoring in camp, he should be in the mix for a rotation spot once the season begins. Impact Sabol played all over the diamond in college and has split time pretty evenly between catcher and the outfield in the minors, but the Giants plan to use him exclusively behind the plate, at least for now. Impact Wood closed the 2022 season on the 60-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement, but his ability to get back on the mound during the first week of spring training suggests that he's returned to full health. The next injury never seems to be far behind Wood, but when he's been able to enjoy a run of sustained health in the past, the veteran lefty has shown the ability to deliver fantasy-friendly numbers. While that wasn't the case in 2022 -- he finished with a career-worst 5.10 ERA in 130.2 innings -- most other underlying metrics (3.29 xFIP, 3.45 SIERA, 18.2 K-BB%) suggested that Wood pitched far better than his ERA indicated. Assuming he escapes spring training unscathed, Wood should have a spot in the San Francisco rotation and may make for an attractive late-round target in deep-league drafts or an appealing early-season streaming option in shallower formats.
