Notches third hold Barlow pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout to earn a hold in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Tigers.

Impact Barlow relieved starter Brady Singer at the start of the eighth inning. The 28-year-old Barlow needed just 10 pitches to earn his third hold of the season. He has a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB across 13.1 innings this season. Josh Staumont worked the ninth inning for a save with Greg Holland and Wade Davis both in a rough patch early in the year. Barlow has picked up one save, one blown save and a win in 10 outings.

Impact Barlow was called upon in the eighth with the Royals clinging to a 7-6 lead but couldn't keep the Rays from scoring. He allowed a game-tying RBI double to Randy Arozarena in the eighth, then gave the Rays their lead back after surrendering a second RBI double to Joey Wendle in the ninth. Fortunately, the Royals were able to rally for two runs in the bottom half of the inning, handing Barlow a win. Overall, the 28-year-old has been fairly solid with a 2.92 ERA and 14:4 K:BB over 12.1 innings so far.

He did well to keep the Rangers off the board, one of three Royals pitchers who achieved that in a high-scoring Opening Day game. Barlow was alright with a 4.20 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, seven holds and two saves in 32 appearances last year. The 28-year-old righty is likely to work in a setup role behind Greg Holland to begin 2021.

Impact Barlow saw plenty of usage during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He converted on both of his save chances and posted a 4.20 ERA and 39:9 K:BB over 30 innings while making 32 relief appearances. Following his strong showing over a limited sample in 2020, Barlow worked during the offseason to physically prepare to pitch well over a full season, Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star reports. The right-hander has performed well early in spring training, but he'll likely begin the regular season in a setup role with Greg Holland the favorite to serve as the closer early in the year.

He could be in the closer conversation with Ian Kennedy (calf) out -- the 27-year-old Barlow has one save and three holds in 20 appearances this season.
