Lars Nootbaar - Starting rehab assignment Wednesday Nootbaar (groin) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday and could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list as soon as Friday, MLB.com reports.

Impact Nootbaar will work out with the Cardinals for a second straight day Tuesday before heading to Memphis to play in his first game since Aug. 16, when he suffered a groin contusion in St. Louis' 8-0 loss to Oakland. After taking part in baserunning and defensive work over the weekend, Nootbaar took batting practice Monday, so the 25-year-old looks as though he has resumed full activities. If activated this weekend, Nootbaar is likely to settle back in as the Cardinals' everyday center fielder.

Impact O'Neill sat out with knee discomfort Sunday, but it was a minor enough issue for him to only miss one game. The outfielder played the full game in left field, which should alleviate concerns about the injury. He's up to four steals on the year while slashing .236/.323/.405 across 60 contests.

Impact Goldschmidt has regained his power swing with three homers over his last eight games. He's gone 10-for-28 (.357) with seven RBI in that span. Impact Matz has been shut down since landing on the injured list Aug. 14, and the Cardinals decided it was time to send him for a test. Impact Helsley was recently pulled off his minor-league assignment for about a week after experiencing pain in his forearm during his Aug. 18 outing with Double-A Springfield, but he rejoined the affiliate over the weekend and made a one-inning appearance Sunday, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out a batter. Though he wasn't at his sharpest Sunday, Helsey indicated that so long as he bounces back well from that rehab outing when he's re-evaluated Monday and Tuesday, he'll be on track to rejoin the St. Louis bullpen by the middle of the week. Helsley logged seven saves in 11 chances before landing on the IL in June, but the Cardinals could elect to ease him back into the closer's role coming off the lengthy absence.
