Impact Goldschmidt gave the Cardinals an early lead with his first-inning dinger, but that was the only damage the Redbirds could manage on the evening. The 35-year-old slugger remains productive, slashing .278/.367/.457 through 125 games. However, his 21 home runs leave him on a pace to finish below 30 home runs in a non-pandemic shortened season for the first time since 2016.

Miles Mikolas - Struggles again in loss Mikolas (6-10) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on eight hits and zero walks over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out three.
Impact Among Mikolas' eight hits allowed were six extra-base hits, including five doubles. His last hit allowed was a solo home run to Alec Bohm in the sixth, which increased the Phillies' lead to three as they cruised from there to the victory. The eminently hittable Mikolas has now allowed 52 hits with only 30 strikeouts over his past 42.2 innings with a 6.12 ERA. He'll look to turn things around in his next start, currently scheduled for a matinee matchup next Wednesday at home against the Padres.

Impact The right-hander needed just 56 pitches to cruise through his five innings in what could be his final rehab appearance before rejoining the Cardinals. With the rotation needs St. Louis has right now, Woodford would seem to be a good bet to be used as a starter down the stretch. He's been out since late June with a right shoulder strain.

Zack Thompson - Earns third win Thompson (3-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Pirates. He struck out five.
Impact Thompson beaned Connor Joe in the third inning with the bases loaded to send home the Pirates' first run of the game and later surrendered a solo shot to Ke'Bryan Hayes. Outside of that the lefty was efficient in only his second start of the season and actually struck out four of the first eight batters he faced before going on to log his third win. Thompson has now allowed two earned runs over five innings in each of his first two starts, posting a 10:2 K:BB over that run. The only downside is that he's also given up a home run in each of his last three appearances.
