Dylan Carlson - Heads back to bench Carlson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins.

Impact Carlson stayed put at the trade deadline and ended up starting in center field in Tuesday's 3-2 loss, but because the Cardinals didn't deal away any of their other outfielders, his outlook for playing time over the rest of the season hasn't dramatically changed. Brendan Donovan's (elbow) season-ending injury might indirectly help Carlson, though the opening that St. Louis now has in its lineup could end up being filled by Alec Burleson, who is serving as the Cardinals' designated hitter Wednesday. Carlson should at least continue to play regularly against left-handed pitching.

Nolan Gorman - Back in lineup Wednesday Gorman (back) will start at second base and bat third Wednesday against the Twins.

Impact Gorman was on the bench for the Cardinals' last two games due to back soreness, but he'll be healthy enough to play the field Wednesday. The 23-year-old has made 26 of his starts this season as a designated hitter, but he'll likely see the overwhelming majority of his playing time at second base moving forward with Brendan Donovan (elbow) set to undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday.

Matthew Liberatore - Joining rotation Thursday Liberatore is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Twins, Joey Schneider of Fox 2 St. Louis reports.

Impact Liberatore is one of two new additions to the St. Louis rotation this week, as Dakota Hudson will also be picking up a start Wednesday as the Cardinals replace the outgoing Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty, who were moved ahead of the trade deadline. After getting out to a hot start over the first month of the season at Triple-A Memphis, Liberatore has struggled to maintain that form while bouncing between the big leagues and minors since the beginning of May. He's been particularly unimpressive over his nine outings (eight starts) with St. Louis, accruing a 6.75 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 3.8 K-BB% in 32 innings. Liberatore will still be worth holding in NL-only leagues since he'll have a fairly clear path to a starting role the rest of the way, but he'll need to show improved results before becoming a trusted lineup option in most deeper mixed leagues.

Dakota Hudson - Moves into rotation Hudson will start Wednesday's game against the Twins at Busch Stadium.

Impact Hudson and Matthew Liberatore will slot into the rotation this week after St. Louis sent out starters Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty to the Rangers and Orioles, respectively, prior to Tuesday's trade deadline. Though all but one of his seven appearances with the Cardinals this season have come in a starting role, Hudson should be able to provide a decent amount of length in his return to the rotation Wednesday after he covered 4.1 innings and tossed 93 pitches out of the bullpen in his most recent appearance last Thursday against the Cubs. Hudson holds a 4.19 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 19.1 innings in the big leagues on the season.

Tyler O'Neill - Clubs third homer O'Neill went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Twins.

Impact The outfielder gave St. Louis a bit of hope in the ninth inning by homering off Minnesota closer Jhoan Duran, but he got no help from his teammates. It's O'Neill's third home run of the year and first in 11 games since returning from his latest IL stint, but the 28-year-old has been productive over that stretch by slashing .316/.422/.500 with four doubles, a steal, five runs and five RBI.

Miles Mikolas - Fans seven in tough loss Mikolas (6-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Cardinals were downed 3-2 by the Twins, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out seven.

Impact The right-hander was able to take his normal turn through the rotation while waiting to hear the results of his appeal on a five-game suspension, and Mikolas delivered his ninth quality start of the season on 109 pitches (72 strikes), although he came up short in a pitchers' duel with Pablo Lopez. Since the beginning of July, Mikolas has posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 24:4 K:BB through 35 innings, but assuming his suspension for throwing at Ian Happ in his previous outing is upheld, his next start will likely come some time next week, as the Cardinals shuffle their rotation following the Jack Flaherty trade.
