Dylan Carlson - Makes fifth straight start Carlson will start in center field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Impact Carlson is in the lineup for the fifth game in a row and appears to have at least temporarily taken hold of a regular spot in the outfield over Tyler O'Neill, who has now sat out three times -- all against right-handed starting pitchers -- during that stretch. Though Carlson is maintaining an unremarkable .590 OPS for the season, having him in the lineup allows the Cardinals to field their best defensive outfield.

Jake Woodford - Moved to bullpen Cardinals manager Oli Marmol announced Wednesday that Woodford has been moved to the bullpen, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Impact Adam Wainwright (groin) is expected to come off the injured list to fill the vacant rotation spot Saturday against the Tigers. Woodford has struggled to a 5.72 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB through 28.1 innings (six starts) this season for St. Louis.

Wilking Rodríguez - Undergoes shoulder surgery Rodriguez underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his right shoulder and will be sidelined 4-to-6 months, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Impact Rodriguez was placed on the injured list before Opening Day after experiencing shoulder tightness toward the end of Cardinals camp this spring. Now the Rule 5 Draft pick can probably be ruled out for the entire 2023 campaign. He did log three appearances at Triple-A Memphis last month before his shoulder began barking again.

Paul DeJong - Takes a seat Tuesday DeJong is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels.

Impact DeJong has been a fairly regular presence at shortstop for the Cardinals since his April 23 return from the injured list, but he'll take a seat Tuesday versus the Angels and Shohei Ohtani. Tommy Edman is playing short and batting ninth. Brendan Donovan is at second base and hitting eighth.

Steven Matz - Suffers fourth loss Matz (0-4) took another loss Tuesday against the Angels, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.

Impact Matz wound up surrendering all four runs in the first frame. He walked Mike Trout, who came around to score following back-to-back singles and Taylor Ward capped off the inning with a three-run blast to left field. Adam Wainwright - Lined up for Saturday return Wainwright (groin) is likely to make his season debut with the Cardinals on Saturday against the Tigers, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Impact Wainwright has looked pretty hittable during his three-start minor-league rehab assignment between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis, yielding nine earned runs on 18 hits and two walks over 13 innings. Still, the Cardinals will hope that the veteran right-hander can help stabilize their pitching staff now that he is recovered from the groin strain that popped up in late March. Even with diminished velocity -- which remains an issue -- Wainwright worked to a solid 3.71 ERA across 191.2 innings for St. Louis in 2022.
